2 The Myth of progress History is moving forward toward a glorious consummation.

3 Escalator Myth The Escalator Myth: We are evolving toward an earthly utopia that is the product of human effort and ingenuity.

4 Hegel As a result of Hegel’s influence everything was seen as subject to evolution - not just living things but also customs, cultures, and concepts.

5 Various Forms The Escalator Myth took various forms… even redemption.

6 Marxism Marxism is the effort by modern mind to secularize the kingdom of God.

7 The Marxist Drama In Marxist drama, the oppressed were the proletariat (urban factory workers), in the newer multicultural ideologies, the oppressed are women, blacks, and homosexuals.

8 Marxism?? While Marxism, though largely discredited as a political ideology, it is still very much alive and well in Western intellectual life.

9 Marx alternate religion
Marx came up with an alternative religion.

10 Marxism comparatively
Marxism’s counterpart to the garden of Eden is the state of primitive communism.

11 Original Sin Original sin was the creation of private property and the division of labor. Redemption is the destruction of private property

12 The end for Marxism The end of history for Marxism is when the original communism will be restored and class conflict will be no more.

13 The Fatal Flaw : Reality
Marxism however is fatally flawed in that it does not match up with reality.

14 Marxism Marxism assumes that the reconstruction of social and economic institutions is enough to usher in harmony and peace, it puts no moral restraints on the leaders in the new order.

15 Problems It denies human nature is evil, absolute power is given. This religion brings destruction and death!

16 Salvation through sex? There are those that believe as we evolve into sexual freedom we will be saved by it.

17 Freud Freud - active in the 19th century: attributed neurosis to the constraints of moral rules and the guilt they produce.

18 Sanger, Kinsey Like Sanger, Kinsey was committed to an ideology that defined morality as a harmful force to be opposed and that elevated sexuality into a means of salvation.

19 Sanger Sanger tried to teach it is only science.

20 Sanger did not believe only science
Sanger, “Remove the constraints and prohibitions which now hinder the release of inner energies, [and] most of the larger evils of society will perish.”

21 What Sanger offered Nothing less than a doctrine of salvation in which morality is the root of all evil and free sexual expression is the path to redemption.

22 Sanger’s new twist The new twist on the serpent’s promise in Eden: It’s not eating to fruit from the tree in the Garden that will make us godlike; it’s the release of sexual energies.

23 The new twist “Through sex, mankind may attain the great spiritual illumination which will transform the world, which will light up the only path to an earthly paradise”

24 Kinsey Like Sanger, he was committed to an ideology that defined morality as a harmful force to be opposed and that elevated sexuality into a means of salvation.

25 Kinsey and sex Kinsey claimed that certain mammals are observed to have sexual contact between males, and even across species; therefore, he concluded, both homosexuality and bestiality are “part of the normal mammalian picture” and are acceptable behavior for humans.

26 Reich, others Reich believed that humans were nothing more than biological creatures and that redemption comes through complete immersion in the sexual reflex.

27 Most Sex Educators Most sex educators have this worldview, that sexual freedom will bring about a more harmonious culture.

28 Reich’s sexual Eden The enemy in Reich’s sexual Eden is, once again, traditional religion and morality, that “murderous philosophy” that creates guilt, distorts our drives, and gives rise to personality disorders.

29 Rimmer’s “The Harrad Experiment”
In a postscript added in the 1990 edition of the novel, Rimmer neatly summarizes his religion: Page 241

30 What to do? How do you respond to people who believe this?
What are the truths about sexual freedom that we have seen played out? How has sexual freedom affected our nation?
