Law Enforcement (Police, RCMP)
Police officers keep people safe and enforce the law. They patrol the community and respond to calls about crimes and accidents. Requirements: High School Police/RCMP Training Program (after you’ve been recruited) Canadian citizen or have permanent resident Proficient in English and/or French Driver's licence Health and psychological standards Vision and hearing standards Physical fitness/abilities

Border Services A team that protects the safety and security of Canada and Canadians, while ensuring the free flow of admissible people and goods across the border. Requirements High School Canadian Firearms Safety Course and the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course Driver’s Licence Standardized Tests Second language Evaluation (Some positions require employees to be proficient in English and French) Physical Fitness/Abilities Psychological Requirements Medical Exam Willing to accept an assigned posting anywhere in Canada

Corrections Officer Correctional officers maintain order in jails and prisons. They supervise and control the inmates to ensure that the facility remains secure. Requirements High School Physical fitness Criminal Record Search, Child Abuse Registry Check, and Adult Abuse Registry Check Internal security checks First Aid and CPR certificates Drivers license 10 week Correctional Officer/Juvenile Counsellor Training Program

Security Guard Security guards provide peace of mind. They protect buildings from theft, fire, vandalism, and break-ins. Requirements may include: High School On the job training Criminal Record Check CPR/First Aid Drivers Licence Physical fitness Good hearing and vision Ability to work in stressful conditions

The following are not required, but may make you more competitive: Post-secondary education Work experience with increasing responsibilities Life experience Demonstrated commitment towards community involvement

Criminology (3 or 4 years) Law, Protection And Safety Diploma (1 year) U of W Criminal Justice (3 or 4 years) Spring Break Workshop (1 week) BU RRC Sociology: Crime and Community (3 or 4 years) Justice and Public Safety (continuing education) Justice System Certificate (1 year) UCN ACC Law Enforcement (1 year) Police Studies (1 year) Partnership between ACC and BU - The agreement allows ACC Police Studies graduates credit for courses taken to go towards the three or four-year Bachelor of Arts, Crime and Community degree at BU. ACC will reciprocate this agreement by allowing BU graduates to transfer 18 credit hours towards the eight-month Police Studies certificate as well. The BU Justice System Certificate Program consists of 30 credit hours of university study. All courses taken in the certificate program are regular credit courses and may be used later for credit toward a B.A., or B.Sc.

Probation or Parole Officer
Probation officers supervise offenders who have been released into the community. They make sure these people follow the terms of their probation. Requirements Bachelor or Master of Social Work or related field (Criminology, Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice) Work experience in social services Criminal record check

Criminologist Criminologists study crime statistics to understand the causes and effects of crime. This information can help prevent and control crime. Requirements At least a Bachelor’s Degree (Criminology, Psychology, or Sociology) Consider a Masters or PhD

Paralegal Search records, prepare routine documents and letters under the direction of a lawyer, maintain business legal records Education RRC – Legal Assistant (1 year) U of W – Criminal Justice (3 or 4 years) U of M – Law (5+ years)

Lawyer Advise individuals and business clients and draw up legal documents such as contracts, wills and agreements. Prepare and present cases representing clients in courts of law. Requirements Pre-Law (English, history, or political science…) (at least 2 years, usually a bachelors degree) BU CMU Providence UC U of M U of W LSAT Law School U of M – Law (3 years) Community/School Involvement (e.g. debate team, student politics, …) Pre-Law – Choose a program that you will be able to do well. Marks are important. Also, consider choosing a first degree that could serve as a back-up plan.
