1 It is never a good idea to be angry with God
Dislike what the Lord commands Jonah 1:2-3 Foolish to be angry with God Jonah 4:1-3 Misplaced anger Jonah 4:9-11 Jonah 1:2-3 "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me." (3) But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. Jonah 4:1-3 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he became angry. (2) So he prayed to the LORD, and said, "Ah, LORD, was not this what I said when I was still in my country? Therefore I fled previously to Tarshish; for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm. (3) Therefore now, O LORD, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live!" Jonah 4:9-11 Then God said to Jonah, "Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?" And he said, "It is right for me to be angry, even to death!" (10) But the LORD said, "You have had pity on the plant for which you have not labored, nor made it grow, which came up in a night and perished in a night. (11) And should I not pity Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred and twenty thousand persons who cannot discern between their right hand and their left--and much livestock?

2 It is never a good idea to mock the Lord
Assyria destroyed cities of Judah 2 Kings 18:13 It is never a good idea to mock the Lord Hezekiah tries to buy off Assyria 2 Kings 18:14 Sennacherib mocked the Lord 2 Kings 18:35 Army destroyed and king killed 2 Kings 19:34-37 2 Kings 18:13 And in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them. 2 Kings 18:14 Then Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria at Lachish, saying, "I have done wrong; turn away from me; whatever you impose on me I will pay." And the king of Assyria assessed Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold. 2 Kings 18:35 Who among all the gods of the lands have delivered their countries from my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem from my hand?' " 2 Kings 19: 'For I will defend this city, to save it For My own sake and for My servant David's sake.' " (35) And it came to pass on a certain night that the angel of the LORD went out, and killed in the camp of the Assyrians one hundred and eighty-five thousand; and when people arose early in the morning, there were the corpses--all dead. (36) So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went away, returned home, and remained at Nineveh. (37) Now it came to pass, as he was worshiping in the temple of Nisroch his god, that his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer struck him down with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Then Esarhaddon his son reigned in his place.

3 It is never a good idea to complain against God
Complained and consumed by fire Numbers 11:1 Korah & 250 Plague & 14,700 Numbers 16 Numbers 11:1 Now when the people complained, it displeased the LORD; for the LORD heard it, and His anger was aroused. So the fire of the LORD burned among them, and consumed some in the outskirts of the camp. Numbers 16:41 On the next day all the congregation of the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron, saying, "You have killed the people of the LORD." Numbers 16:49 Now those who died in the plague were fourteen thousand seven hundred, besides those who died in the Korah incident.

4 Complained and consumed by fire
Numbers 11:1 Korah & 250 Plague & 14,700 Numbers 16 Believed 10 spies Tested 10 times Numbers 14 Numbers 14:22 because all these men who have seen My glory and the signs which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have put Me to the test now these ten times, and have not heeded My voice, Numbers 14: "How long shall I bear with this evil congregation who complain against Me? I have heard the complaints which the children of Israel make against Me. (28) Say to them, 'As I live,' says the LORD, 'just as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will do to you: (29) The carcasses of you who have complained against Me shall fall in this wilderness, all of you who were numbered, according to your entire number, from twenty years old and above.

5 It is never a good idea to make excuses to God
Aaron Exodus 32:22-24 Exodus 32:35 King Saul 1 Sam. 15:15-16 1 Sam. 15:23 Exodus 32: And Aaron said, "Let not the anger of my lord burn hot. You know the people, that they are set on evil. (23) For they said to me, 'Make us gods who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.' (24) So I said to them, 'Let any who have gold take it off.' So they gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf." Exodus 32:35 Then the LORD sent a plague on the people, because they made the calf, the one that Aaron made. 1 Samuel 15: Saul said, "They have brought them from the Amalekites; for the people spared the best of the sheep and the cattle, to sacrifice to the LORD your God; but the rest we have utterly destroyed." (16) Then Samuel said to Saul, "Stop! I will tell you what the LORD said to me last night." He replied, "Speak." 1 Samuel 15:23 For rebellion is no less a sin than divination, and stubbornness is like iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has also rejected you from being king.“

6 “Many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord’”
Aaron Exodus 32:22-24 Exodus 32:35 King Saul 1 Sam. 15:15-16 1 Sam. 15:23 “Many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord’” Matt.7:21-23 Matthew 7: "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. (22) On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many deeds of power in your name?' (23) Then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; go away from me, you evildoers.'

7 It is never a good idea to challenge God
“Who is the Lord” Exodus 5:1-2 “Appoint for us, then, a king” 1 Sam 8:5 & 7 Exodus 5:1-2 Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'Let my people go, so that they may celebrate a festival to me in the wilderness.'" (2) But Pharaoh said, "Who is the LORD, that I should heed him and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, and I will not let Israel go." 1 Samuel 8:5 and said to him, "You are old and your sons do not follow in your ways; appoint for us, then, a king to govern us, like other nations." 1 Samuel 8:7 and the LORD said to Samuel, "Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them.

8 “Appoint for us, then, a king”
“Who is the Lord” Exodus 5:1-2 “Appoint for us, then, a king” 1 Sam 8:5 & 7 Challenging Jesus Matt. 15:1-2 Matthew 15:1-2 Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, (2) "Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat." Matthew 15:3-9 He answered them, "And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? (4) For God commanded, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and, 'Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.' (5) But you say, 'If anyone tells his father or his mother, "What you would have gained from me is given to God," (6) he need not honor his father.' So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God. (7) You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said: (8) "'This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; (9) in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'"

9 How should we approach the Lord?
With honor – 1 Tim. 1:17 With humility – James 4:10 With thanksgiving – Phil. 4:6 With confidence - 1 Tim. 4:10 1 Timothy 1:17 To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. James 4:10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. Philippians 4:6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 1 Timothy 4:10 For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe.
