Science or Theology Which are you more likely to ask/be interested in…
How was the universe created? Why was the universe created? Genesis is a religious account of the Creation of the Universe. The Sacred Author was not intending to communicate precisely how God created the universe (although it seems that way), but was showing Why God created it.
5
Genesis 1 – “origin” God Creates out of Nothing – Ex Nihilo
First three days: Creation of Time – day/night, progression from one state to another Creation of Space – separation of “water” by the “firmament” Creation of Life Second three days (Rulers) Rulers of Time – Sun & Moon are created Rulers of Space – Sea and Air Creatures Rulers of Life – lastly man – Steward of Creation “God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good”
6
On the Seventh Day, God Rested
God doesn’t stop at six days We are not merely made and that’s it We join with God in the Sabbath covenant God Blessed the day and made it Holy. All Creation is a great temple for the worship of God
7
Genesis 2:4 – Second Creation Story
Not two different stories, same story but different emphasis – remember different authors! Sets up original intent of God-Human interaction – Eden = perfection
8
Creationists vs. Evolutionists
9
Made in the Image of God God, as a loving Father of his children, created Adam and Eve to co-create with Him (our work). We have intelligence, free will, and the capacity to love. All human life possesses Sacredness
10
God, Our FAther Main Point Brief Explanation God is our Father
In Genesis, “Image and Likeness” describes a father/son relationship We are like God We have intelligence, free will, and the capacity to love; we share in the love and life of the Trinity Human life is sacred Being made in the Image of God makes us sacred; we have value in ourselves, regardless of what we do or possess Work has special value We work in the imitation of God our Father, our dignity does not come from what we do, but our work has dignity because it comes from us.
11
The Fall of Man Genesis 3 Adam and Eve Nahash – serpent Original Sin
“You will not die” – spiritual death Truth, but twisted Original Sin PRIDE! Tricked by our own desires Kicked out of Paradise
12
What we lost when we fell (Consequences of the Fall)
Main Point Brief Explanation Childbearing Child birth will be painful Family Life Still in the Image of God, but marred by sin Work Work will be toilsome, sometimes difficult and filled with thorns Physical Life Will end with death
13
MetaPhysical Questions
From Ancient Greek: AFTER a division of philosophy that is concerned with the fundamental nature of reality and being and that includes ontology, cosmology, & often epistemology Is the universe governed by chance; fate; necessity; or a transcendent, intelligent and good being? Why is there evil? Where does it come from, who is responsible for it, and is there liberation from it?
14
Cain and Abel Genesis 4 Cain’s Envy God’s intervention
“Am I my Brother’s Keeper?” “That escalated quickly” – Ron Burgundy
