Introduction Have you hear about Diphtheria? Diphtheria is a sickness that is dangerous and they needed a cure in Alaska. So, dog sleds would carry medicine around through trails and give to hospitals. Then races with dog sleds started. The Iditarod race started in 1973 and is very famous.

DOGS Dogs in the Iditarod race are usually Siberian Huskies. They are powerful, strong, and energetic from the artic. The Siberian Husky was bred hundreds of years ago by the Chukchi, a tribe from eastern Siberian, Alaska. When the Iditarod race started they were great dogs. They had lots of gear like booties, harnesses, and dog jackets.

ROUTES & CHEPOINTS The routes and check points are different because Alaska did not get a lot of snow. The Iditarod race started in Anchorage. But this year they started in Fairbanks. There are only 19 checkpoints but since the race started in Fairbanks there are only 16 checkpoints.

Awards The Red Lantern Award is given to the musher who finishes in last place. Golden Clipboard Award is given to the officials for most outstanding checkpoint. PenAir Spirit of Alaska Award is given to the musher to reach McGrath.
