Year 8 Humanities 2017-18 Overview
Half term 1 Half term 2 Half term 3 Half term 4 Half term 5 Half term 6 History- Medieval lives and the Black Death (source skills) Geography- the living world natural disasters (understanding formations of landscapes) History- The Tudors and Stuarts (extended writing) Geography- Ecosystems and map work History- World War 2 and the holocaust (research and empathy) Geography- Coasts (topography, understanding processes) Students will develop an understanding of the Middle Ages through the use of sources. Students will know the value of a primary and secondary source and will build confidence in using different sources to strengthen their historical understanding Students will develop an understanding of the world we live in through the study of tectonic plates, weather and forces of nature. Students will know how landscapes form and why natural disasters happen. Student will be able come up with a plan to prevent damage to communities. Students will know the impact of the Tudor and Stuart dynasties had on England. Students will engage in an extended writing task on why Henry VIII split from Rome and to be able to come to a conclusion as whether or not Charles I should have been executed. Students will develop an understanding of the different ecosystems of the world. This topic will give an overview to different ecosystems and will use the rainforest as a case study. In this final KS3 history topic, students will learn to causes, damage and the lasting effects of this key event in twentieth century history. Students will learn how to research and combine all their historical skills to complete this topic. The holocaust is a national requirement for KS3 History. In this final KS3 topic, students will learn why the is constantly changing. Students will get the opportunity to visit the coast and to see the change first hand in Eastbourne. This topic is a good introduction to GCSE geography as it is also covered in GCSE. HAO1 =Communication. How you write and talk about the past. HAO3 = Sources and interpretation. Understanding how historians form opinions on what happened in the past HAO5 = Historical enquiry. Independent working, asking and answering questions about the past GAO1: This objective assesses your understanding of geographical knowledge of locations, places, processes, environments and different scales. GAO2c: This objective assesses your understanding of geographical knowledge of locations, places, processes, environments and different scales. HAO1 =Communication. HAO2 B = This objective assesses your understanding of the cause/s of events and changes in the past as well as the consequence of them immediately and into the future. HAO5 = Historical enquiry. GAO4: This objective assesses your ability to use geographical skills and techniques such as map skills, fieldwork, GIS, communication and research. HAO1 =Communication.
