NFL Anthem Protests:
Aug. 14 & 20, 2016: Colin Kaepernick first sits during anthem. Nobody notices.
Aug Reporter unintentionally tweets photo of Kaepernick sitting. Story blows up.
Kaepernick: “There are a lot of things that need to change, one in specific is police brutality. There are people being murdered unjustly and not being held accountable.”
Team: “Players are encouraged but not required to stand during the playing of the national anthem.”

2. Recent First Amendment Events
NFL Anthem Protests:
September, 2016: Kaepernick begins to kneel rather than sit. Various other players and teams join protest in various ways.
Feb. 2017: At season’s end, Kaepernick opts out of contract; no team has signed him to date.
Aug – Present: Various players and teams protest in various ways.
Sept. 2017: President Trump tweets: “NFL owners don’t want to pick (Kaepernick) up because they don’t want to get nasty tweet from Donald Trump.”

NFL Anthem Protests:
Sept., 2017: President Trump tweets: “If a player wants the privilege of making millions of dollars in the NFL, or other leagues, he or she should not be allowed to disrespect our Great American Flag (or Country) by refusing to stand for the national anthem. If not, YOU'RE FIRED. Find something else to do!”
Sept., 2017: Players and owners react with widespread protests.
Oct., 2017: Colin Kaepernick files a grievance against the NFL, alleging collusion.

4. Recent First Amendment Events
Charlottesville Protests:
Spring 2017: Charlottesville City Council votes to rename two parks named for Confederate Generals, and to take down a statue of Robert E. Lee.
The “Monument Fund” and the “Sons of Confederate Veterans” filed suit to enjoin the removal. Judge agrees.
City Council votes again; this time selling the statue to a private party who will remove it.
White nationalist Richard Spencer leads demonstration; met by counter protesters. Three arrested, one policeman injured.

5. Recent First Amendment Events
Charlottesville Protests:
Plaque removed from statute; mayor announces renaming of Robert E. Lee Park as Emancipation Park.
KKK holds rally in Emancipation Park KKK met by about 1,000 counter protesters. 22 arrested.
“Unite the Right” organizer Jason Kessler plans demonstration in Emancipation Park; files suit when City Council moves event to different park citing safety. Judge agrees on the night before.

6. Recent First Amendment Events
Charlottesville Protests:
August 12, 2017: Protesters begin gathering three hours before Kessler’s demonstration. Violence erupts. Police declare an “unlawful assembly” and Gov. McAuliffe declares state of emergency.
By 1 PM, park is cleared, and protesters are marching away. A car drives into a crowd of protesters, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer and hospitalizing 19 others.
That evening, two policemen die in helicopter crash.
October, 2017: Another white supremacy rally held; no violence.

7. Recent First Amendment Events
Berkeley Protests:
Feb. 1, 2017: Milo Yiannopoulos speech inspires 1500 people to protest. A group of “Black Bloc” protestors engaged in violent protest and arson. Event cancelled.
President Trump threatens to “de-fund” Berkeley.
March 4, 2017: Pro-Donald Trump march draws violent protests. Seven injuries and ten arrests.
April 15, 2017: Another pro-Trump rally inspires protests and violence. Eleven injured. Male student punches female. Professor attacks three people with bike lock.
April 27, 2017: Administrators cancel appearance by Ann Coulter. Other conservatives spoke on that date, with relatively peaceful protests at another location.

8. Recent First Amendment Events
Berkeley Protests:
August 27, 2017: Dueling protests in the wake of Charlottesville. Generally peaceful until Antifa groups invaded the conservative protest.
September 14, 2017: Ben Shapiro gave speech on campus. No one wearing masks allowed on campus, and city council authorizes use of pepper spray. No violence.
Sept. 24, 2017: A number of conservatives invited to campus for “Free Speech Week.” Two hundred professors and grad students sign open protest letter. Conservative group files with DOJ, but backs out of event. Milo Y and others do a brief photo op, anyway.

9. Recent First Amendment Events
Berkeley Protests:
Sept. 26, 2017: Fight breaks out in an “Empathy Tent” on campus; three arrested.
June 2017: Milo fan sues Berkeley for $23 million dollars alleging free speech violations and pepper-spraying. Later drops suit.
Berkeley mayor suggest classifying Antifa as a criminal gang.
