1. Welcome to Year 6
Today we are primarily looking at how to help your child in their reading test.
Also, you will be given information about all the elements children need to know for their SPAG test and how they are assessment in their writing.

2. Reading test
Consists of 3 texts – a combination of fiction and non-fiction.
The test is 1 hour and consists of 50 marks.
Have a look at the different examples on your table – what are your opinions?

20. SPAG Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar.
Spelling Test is approximately 30 minutes.
This test is 45 minutes – punctuation and Grammar
In Year 6 we cover everything learnt from Year 1 – Year 6 as that is what the test consists of.

22. adjective Adjectives describe nouns. They can be : Comparative: er
Superlative: est
e.g. red cat; hirsute Derek; bleak, intimidating castle; undying love; interesting fact

23. VERBS
Verbs are doing or being words. They can behave in a range of ways.
e.g. kick, is, feel, seem

24. adverbs
Adverbs describe how, where, and when things happen. They ‘describe’ verbs.
e.g. peacefully, carefully, outside, by the car, tomorrow, today.
They do not always end in ly.

25. NOUN Nouns name things, ideas or people. They can be:
Common: Everyday objects.
Proper: Names of people, places or brands
Abstract: A noun denoting an idea, quality, or state rather than a concrete object.
Collective: A count object (herd)
Compound: A noun made up of 2 words.
e.g. cat, Derek, castle, love, fact

26. PRONOUN Pronouns are used in place of nouns.
e.g. Jack tried to carry Jack’s bag but Jack’s bag was too heavy for Jack.
Jack tried to carry his bag but it was too heavy for him.

27. PREPOSITION
Prepositions are words (sometimes a group of words) that show the relationship between two parts of a sentence e.g. where, when, who.
e.g. The old man waited at the bus stop by the post office.
The match was pretty much all over after 10 minutes.
The lion was killed by the hunter

28. DETERMINERS
Determiners are words which occur before nouns to show whether they are plural, singular, definite etc.
e.g. the, one, a, these, our, both, each, every.

29. CONJUNCTION
Conjunctions link together phrases, clauses or ideas in a sentence.
Coordinating: Join two clauses of equal measure. (FANBOY)
Subordinating: can start a sentence or go in the middle. (I SAW A WABUB)
e.g. They went to the beach however it was too cold.
The children played while the bread was baking.

30. Writing
There is no SATs test on writing – this is internally moderated.
Throughout the year children have the opportunity to write - editing and improving their work.
