Dozens of animal rescue shelters in Northeast Florida teamed up this weekend for the Mega Pet Adoption. More than 1,000 cats and dogs were brought to the fairgrounds by the rescue shelters to be adopted.

Socks was one of the last cats left at the end of the weekend
Socks was one of the last cats left at the end of the weekend. The Clay County Animal Shelter brought him to the Mega Pet Adoption hoping to find him a home. Kalen, a volunteer for the Clay County Animal Shelter, said that she hopes Socks gets adopted soon because they are a high-kill shelter.

Sara is a five-month-old cat brought by Nassau County Animal Services
Sara is a five-month-old cat brought by Nassau County Animal Services. Ashbelle, a volunteer for the shelter, said that even though Sara wasn’t adopted she will stay at the shelter until she is because they are a no-kill rescue shelter.

Nassau County Animal Services, a no-kill animal shelter, brought 75 dogs to the Mega Pet Adoption and all of them were adopted by the end of the event.

Brian, A volunteer for the Jacksonville Humane Society, said at the beginning of the event all of the small dogs and puppies were adopted first. Many big dogs, like gomer, have to go back to the shelter at the end of the Mega Pet Adoption because they were not adopted.

All of the animals at the Mega Pet Adoption were spayed/neutered, microchipped and vaccinated before being brought to the event. The adoption fee was $20.

PetSmart Charities and Best Friends Animal Society sponsored the event hoping to empty out the animal shelters in Northeast Florida so they can become no-kill shelters.

The Mega Pet Adoption lasted from Friday until Sunday from 10am-6pm each day. More than 800 out of the 1,000 pets that were brought to the event were adopted.
