Fallacies Part 2 A Mr. C Production
2
DO Now 1. Please name 2 steps of problem solving (Doesn’t need to be in order). 2. What does logic mean? 3. What does syllogism mean and what type of reasoning uses it?
3
Tu QUOQUE It’s when you avoid to be involved in a criticism by answer the criticism with your own criticism. Example: John just got into an accident and Mark says he’s horrible driver. John then tells Mark you’re not one to speak about accidents since you got into one last year.
4
Begging the question It’s a form of argument where the conclusion is assumed by the premises. Example: Killing people is wrong, so the death penalty is wrong.
5
Loaded Question The question you asked already has a presumption within it. It can’t be answered without looking guilty. Example: You support North Korea, so you hate America?
6
Gambler’s Fallacy The argument is based off of runs or statistics that less likely to happen. Example: We have lost ten games in row, so the next one, we’re definitely going to win.
7
Composition and division
This occurs when you assume one part of something applies to all, or parts, or that the whole must apply to its parts. Example: Drake a rapper supports Lebron James, so that means all rappers support Lebron James.
8
Anecdotal Evidence A personal experience or one example can be used instead something that has actually meaning. Example: I wouldn’t worry about Halloween, the kids never egged my apartment last year.
9
Fallacy Fallacy Your assumption that if something is poorly argued or there’s a fallacy within it, the claim must be incorrect. Example: Your argument was so stupid, that you know nothing about Rihanna.
10
Fallacy of nature Your argument is strictly based off of if something is natural it makes it valid. Example: I don’t eat gluten because it’s not natural.
11
Black and white You give only two possibilities, when in reality there are much more possibilities than that. Example: You can only eat chocolate or vanilla at this ice cream store (It has 25 different flavors).
12
Burden of proof Someone else is to disprove the person making claims.
Example: You cannot disprove Mr. Jenkins hit Mr. Lugo in the face!
13
False cause Your presumption that perceived relationships and real ones means that one causes the other. Example: Every time I wake up I am hungry. Therefore my sleeping causes my hunger.
14
Worksheet directions Please work on your worksheets for the remainder of the class. Please work quietly, you can talk to your neighbor but don’t copy each other. Use your notes! They will help you big time. If you need assistance please raise your hand, I won’t give the answers obviously though. Whatever you don’t finish in class is homework. If you finish early, please sit quietly and respect those classmates that are still working. Create your own fallacies.
