11 If it does not challenge you, then it does not change you.”
Appreciating Diversity If it does not challenge you, then it does not change you.” - Fred DeVito Think of a person who challenged you. How did this challenge change you? Can social challenges change us for the better? Megan Hall

12 What strengths do you have that might help someone else “up”?
Appreciating Diversity We don’t all have our “ah ha” moments at the same time or in the same way. However, if we work together, we can help each other unlock that knowledge. What strengths do you have that might help someone else “up”?

13 Appreciating Diversity
Everyone has different needs, and different ideas of what character traits look like in action. Be sure you lift others up, by knowing what matters most to them!

14 Compliment Line Sound Familiar? “Do people like me?”
Appreciating Diversity “Do people like me?” “What do they really think of me?” “Is there anything special about me?” “I don’t have any friends here.” “No one even knows I exist.” “I just need some praise today.” Sound Familiar? Start your class/morning with a “Compliment Line.” Students stand in a line facing out. The student at the end steps out of line and turns to face the student in front of him/her. They exchange compliments and then the student moves down the line to the next student. As he/she continues down the line, each student takes his/her turn stepping out of line to move down the row of classmates giving compliments. In this way, every student must compliment every classmate.

15 I Want You To Know On a sheet of paper, students write down the top 5 identity groups they most connect to. Teacher will list all groups that are identified within the classroom. Students will join 1 of the groups that they most identify with. If there is only one member of a group, ask if she/ he feels comfortable alone or if she/ he would like to join another group. Each group uses chart paper to respond to the following questions: What we want you to know about our group. What we never want to see, hear or experience again as a member of this group. What we want our allies to do. When all groups have completed their lists, reassemble the class into one group and have them discuss their answers. When each group has explained their list, ask questions to clarify, not to challenge as the list represents realities for the group. Adapted from Donald Clark’s Diversity Activities and Ice-Breakers Janelle Dickerson

16 What are 3 ways that we can celebrate diversity within our classroom?
Janelle Dickerson

17 What would the world be like if everyone was the same?
Would you prefer to live in a world where everyone was the same or different? Why do you feel that way? Janelle Dickerson

18 Partner with someone in the class that you think you are the most different from. Talk with that person and find 10 things you have in common. Janelle Dickerson

19 Respect for others Janelle Dickerson
Which is your strongest strategy for showing Respect for all? Why? Which strategy can you improve on as a way to show Respect for all? How so? Janelle Dickerson

20 What is the #1 way you would like others to show you Respect
What is the #1 way you would like others to show you Respect? Why is that the most important to you? What do you think is the #1 way to show others that you Respect them? Why do you think that is the most important? Janelle Dickerson Janell

21 Are the words I say with my mouth.
TALKING BUBBLES… Are the words I say with my mouth. Other people can hear my talking bubble words. I can choose words that make people feel good or words that make people feel upset. THINKING BUBBLES... Are the things I think inside my head. No one can hear my thinking bubble words. I can think whatever I want and it won’t make people mad or sad. Thinking bubbles are private. Everyone has different things in their thinking bubbles. No one knows what is in your thinking bubble. Reflection Questions: When is the best time to use my Thinking Bubble? When is the best time to use my Talking Bubble? How can I use my Thinking Bubble to show Respect? How can I use my Talking Bubble to show Respect? Thinking Bubble & Talking Bubble excerpts taken from Jill Kuzma’s SLP Social & Emotional Skill Sharing Site Janelle Dickersonl
