Skills building 3: analyzing statistics
We analyze the statistics gathered from a number of questionnaires before we use the information to write a report. These statistics are analyzed to draw conclusions and make suggestions.
26
How to draw conclusions?
By analyzing a certain group of statistics. How to make suggestions? Based on the conclusion.
27
Practice Below are some statistics gathered from a school survey about students’ hobbies and interests. Analyze the statistics and draw at least three more conclusions, then make your suggestions.
28
Conclusions: Playing sport is the most popular activity for students in the school. The second most popular activity for students in the school is surfing the Internet. Only a few students in the school like reading. Most students in the school do not like dancing.
29
Suggestion: . The school should have more sports equipment.
. The school should help the students understand how to use the Internet for study and research. . The school should find ways to get the students interested in reading. . School social events should not include dancing, because most students simply are not interested in it.

School Survey on Crime and Safety

Step 3: writing a report Look at the report in the textbook and work in groups of four to see how to write a report.
33
From our recent survey of students, we have found that only 8 per cent of the students like reading. The most popular reading subject is humour, which 28 per cent of the students enjoy. This is closely followed by travel books, which 25 per cent of the students are interested in. 16 per cent of the students like reading about sports and twelve per cent like science books. A small number of the students like other subjects, such as history.
34
We want to get the students interested in reading
We want to get the students interested in reading. For this reason, we suggest that we have a humour book club, since humour is the most popular subject. Each class would have its own club meetings once a week. At the meetings, they could discuss what books they are currently reading, and could even read aloud some funny bits from the books.
35
The class monitors could then come up with a list of humour books which are popular with the students, and this list could be shared with the other classes. This would be a good way to encourage students to read by helping them learn about books that they might enjoy.
36
Practice 1 Write your own report about the survey above.
37
Practice 2 假如你是李华,最近你对高三学生的体育活动现状进行了调查,请根据下列图例,用英语写一篇报告,并陈述你的观点。
