Popular places are Tanzania and Cuba (placements), USA and Australia (study abroad) and Europe (Erasmus-exchange).

5 International students at HiB
Courses and programs in English Nomination Admission Accommodation Welcome Week Student assistant Buddy program HiB offers courses in English which are integrated in our regular programs. This means that the international students study together with the Norwegian students. We also make sure that every international students is assigned a buddy. The buddy will met the student at the airport and take her to the hostel. The buddy will also show the student around town and make sure she finds her way around in town as well as on campus. The students are encouraged to participate in welcome week where we make sure that they get all the information they need in order to have a good stay in Bergen and at HiB. Introduction programme: Pick-up service You can arrive in Bergen by air, land or sea. See visitbergen.com for more information about how to get here. If you arrive between 8 am and 10 pm we will arrange for someone to meet you when you arrive in Bergen, provided you let us know when and where you will arrive. Buddy programme As an international student you can say yes to have a buddy during your stay in Bergen. He or she will normally be studying at the same faculty or department as you and will introduce you to the city of Bergen and include you in the regular student life at the university college. Student assistant A student assistant is engaged at the International Office to assist international students. He or she is responsible for the buddy programme and the pick-up service. During the semester he or she will also arrange social events such as welcome party, fishing trips, mountain trips and skiing. You can contact the assistant by . Welcome week The welcome week takes place in the beginning of each semester and it is an exellent opportunity to meet other international students. During the week we make sure that you get all the necessary information about being a student and living in Bergen. Quota students are also welcome to participate in the welcome week as long as it does not conflict with the program they have been admitted to. Academic calendar Spring 2016: 4. January – 17. June Autumn 2016: 15. August Registration with local authorities Depending on the length of stay and country of origin some international students must register with the local police office in Bergen upon arrival in Bergen. See Norwegian Directorate for Immigration (UDI) for more information.

6 Weekend hike to the Hardangerfjord
Bergen is the Gateway to the Fjords and once every semester we treat the international students to a weekend trip to the Hardangerfjord. They go by bus, live in cottages and enjoy the wonderful nature of Kinsarvik. Hiking, canoeing, cooking and eating together makes a weekend to remember for life.

7 Welcome! In addition to making sure that the international students are included in regular campus life, the student assistant, together with the buddies, organize some special events for the international students. She makes sure that the activities are free or low cost, such at hiking in the mountains surrounding Bergen. A trip to IKEA is mandatory if you are to survive on a student budget. On Culture Night, we book the teaching kitchen, give the students small amounts of money and challenge them to cook a typical meal from their home country to share with the others.

8 Thank you for your attention and welcome to Bergen and HiB!
Elin Kvaale, head of international office
