Challenges of finding a place to live, getting a job, new culture & new language Settled in tight-knit ethnic communities Pooled $$$ to build temples, synagogues, or churches Parochial schools Social clubs, orphanages, old folks homes, cemeteries Native born saw immigrant ways as un-American & a threat to American way of life
