The following safe work instructions in NOT INTENDED to replace hands on training requirements of the code of federal regulations. The intent is to provide an overview of known potential safety hazards associated with equipment operation. Hands on training with an experienced operator on each specific model must be conducted. The trainee can not proceed onto production until they are determined ready to proceed by the supervisor of the training. Before any operation or maintenance procedure is performed with or on this equipment, it is important that personnel have a complete understanding of the location and functions of all controls and indicators, as well as, the location and use of all emergency shutdown controls and procedures.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Pre-ops:
Complete preoperational and post startup checks on all equipment used (i.e. two-way radio, mine phones, motor, supply cars, drawbars, track throws, end loader, elevator and hoist).
Ensure safety chain is provided and not damaged.
Draw bar shall be of proper size and length for material being moved.
Inspect safety ropes, slings, clevises and chains to ensure they are not damaged, and are properly sized and rated for the load and rigging arrangement. Note: Damaged ropes, slings, chains, clevises, or damaged eyes must be replaced.
Inspect all coupling devices to insure they are in good working condition. Note: Defective couplers must be repaired before they are used.
Make sure units are adequately coupled together.
Visually check each supply car for overloading of supplies, or supplies stacked too high.
Inspect cage/elevator to make sure there are no extraneous materials on the floor or sides of the cage/elevator and chains are stored out of the way.
Watch for pinch points especially between supply cars, couplings, supply cars and locomotive, and on the portal bottom between the supply trip and ribs.
Couple cars together with the aid of a locomotive. Note: Keep feet off rail.
Align couplings between supply cars, or between locomotive and supply cars, only when cars are at a complete stop. Note: Defective couplers must be repaired before use.
Note: Secure the load and make proper connections to prevent supplies or equipment from tipping or falling. Warning: Use proper body positioning to avoid being struck by falls of supplies, equipment or recoil from breaking attachments.
Open both gates to elevator or cage. Block gate open.

Loading/Unloading Supply Cars:
Ensure the d-rail and track switch are in the correct positions to load or unload cars on cage.
Communicate to the motorman to proceed to cage. Warning: stand clear of loads and pinch points.
No one is to be inside the cage with a supply car, while the car is being connected or disconnected, to the locomotive, or connecting supply cars.
Locomotive, or connecting supply cars, must remain outby the track d-rail when persons are present on the cage for the purpose of disconnecting securing chains, or preparing a car to be connected.
D-rail must remain on the mine track.
Once supply car is correctly positioned on elevator or cage signal motorman to stop.
Secure supply car to the elevator on cage.
Close both gates and send elevator or cage.
Follow site specific guidelines for weight or number of car limits.
Follow site specific guidelines for hoisting or lowering supplies, personnel, or heavy equipment.
Note: prior to advancing a locomotive or connecting supply cars inby the de-rail and into the elevator or cage, positive identification must be made to verify that no one is on the elevator or cage, and all persons are in a safe location.
Make sure units are adequately coupled together.
Warning: use proper lifting techniques when opening gate, de-rail and throwing switch.
Uncouple car and signal motorman to back away outby de-rail.
Reinstall de-rail into track.
