4. In the twenty-first century, the world is becoming smaller
In the twenty-first century, the world is becoming smaller. Ideas and cultures are traveling around the globe in a matter of seconds. People are becoming more open to opinions and beliefs that have been previously disregarded. Scientific advancement has reached levels that were once thought to only be found in stories and movies. Despite these levels of achievement and progress, the world is still backwards concerning the oppression of women. People are somewhat aware that women are treated as inferior in parts of the world, but not many truly understand the enormity and perversity of the situation. People read so called “dystopian novels” such as The Handmaid’s Tale, and do not realize that the twisted society is not a work of fiction but very real and equally horrifying. The plight of women in the book can be compared to that of women in parts of Asia and the Middle East. The abuse and trafficking of women lead to a feeling of hopelessness and despair that the situation will not improve, a lack of love in male-female relationships, and a physical immorality of the entire trafficking system that supersedes anyone’s claim that the oppression of women is part of a traditional culture.
