The Earth’s Structure Earth is NOT a solid ball
Rather, it is a series of shell layers that surround one another

CAI LAB ACTIVITY: Earth’s Interior & Exterior Layers
Your assignment is to create a multi-media presentation explaining the interior and exterior structure of the Earth. Start with Earth’s interior. Research information about the four main layers: Inner Core, Outer Core, Mantle, and Crust. Include a simple explanation of each layer, the size (depth of each layer in miles or kilometers), and the composition of each layer. Finally, be sure to include at least one picture or diagram. This should be no more than four or five slides. Next, you will research and explain Earth’s four outer spheres. They are: lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere. Provide a simple definition/explanation for each sphere, and include a picture of each sphere (5 slides max). Finally, on the last slide, create a “table” (go to “insert” at the top and then “table”). The table should be 2 columns by 4 rows. In the left column, list all four of the spheres. In the right column, use an informal google search and summarize some of the biggest threats to each of the four spheres. PRINTING INSTRUCTIONS: Go to “File” then “Print.” Under the “print what” drop box, select “Handouts” and change the “slides per page” to “4.” ASSIGNMENT CHECKLIST & POINT VALUE _____ All four of Earth’s interior layers identified, explained, and diagramed correctly. (10pts) _____ All four of Earth’s exterior layers identified, explained, and diagramed correcly. (10pts) ______ Includes a table/chart of Earth’s exterior spheres and summary of threats (25pts) CAI LAB ACTIVITY: Earth’s Interior & Exterior Layers Your assignment is to create a multi-media presentation explaining the interior and exterior structure of the Earth. MISSION IMPOSSIBLE….OR IS IT? (40 Points)
Can you and your partner think of a creative way to incorporate ALL FOUR of the following concepts into just ONE picture/diagram? Read over these four spheres that make up the exterior (outside) part of the Earth. Try to make sense of each concept on its own…and then try to think about how you could put all four concepts into just one picture/diagram that labels and defines each of the Earth’s four spheres. Here is the information on the spheres: Surrounding the earth is a layer of gases called the atmosphere. It contains the oxygen we breathe, protects the earth from radiation and space debris, and provides the medium for weather and climate. Next, is the solid rock portion of the earth’s surface, called the lithosphere. The lithosphere includes the upper mantle and earth’s crust. Under the ocean, the lithosphere forms the seafloor. The huge landmasses above the water are called continents. There are seven continents. The next part of the earth’s exterior is the hydrosphere. The hydrosphere is made up of the water elements on the earth, which include oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, and any water in the atmosphere. Together, the atmosphere, the lithosphere, and the hydrosphere all form what is called the biosphere. The biosphere is the part of the earth where any plants and animals live. Do you remember your task stated above? Can you figure out a way? Draw it, color it, label each sphere, and then define each sphere in your own words on the diagram. * This slide will self destruct in 10 seconds…………….

After Test Assignment 1. Create a diagram of earth’s interior. Include each part (4 total), the distance of each part, and what each part is made out of. Use page 28 to guide you. (20 points) 2. Create a graphic representation that shows & defines ALL four components of the earth’s exterior (Lithosphere, Hydrosphere, Biosphere, & Atmosphere). (20 Points)
23
In groups of two, create a graphic representation that shows & defines ALL four components of the earth’s exterior in ONE picture. Make sure to draw, label, and define each external sphere of the Earth. (Lithosphere, Hydrosphere, Biosphere, & Atmosphere). SEE PAGE 28 IN THE BOOK. On a small sheet of computer paper stapled to the back, create a chart that lists each sphere and provides examples of five things (living or non-living) that someone could find by visiting each sphere.
