1 Journey to the Center of Earth

2 Geology Geology – the study of Earth processes and materials

3 Main Layers of the Earth
Crust Mantle Outer Core Inner Core

4 The Crust Layer that we live on (Lithosphere) 5-25 miles thick
Consists of cooled rock Thinnest layer of the earth There are 2 kinds of Crust: Continental (thicker) and Oceanic (thinner)

5 The Mantle Semi-liquid (magma) 3000 km wide
softer closer to the surface (Asthenosphere) Has convection currents that move the continental plates

6 The Outer Core Liquid, molten rock Very high temperatures Made of Nickel and Iron 2300 km thick

7 The Inner Core Solid layer Solid because of high pressure Mostly Iron
6,000 degree Celsius. 2,100 km wide

8 4 Main Layers

9 Lithosphere Lithosphere Made up of the Crust and Upper Mantle
The outer part of the Earth that has cooled. Litho= stone

10 Asthenosphere Asthenosphere
Plastic like consistency below the Lithosphere Asthenos= weak Below the Lithosphere The Middle Mantle

11 Facts Facts Earth is about 6400 km in radius
~25,000 miles in circumference Maximum inferred temperature is about 6000 Degrees Celsius Core is 13 times more dense than water

12 What is it made of? What are Earth’s materials?
Materials – rocks, ex. Basalt, Granite. Other materials: minerals like Iron and Nickle Magma- below Earth’s surface Lava- above the surface
