Genre- In this class, genre refers to the different types of books we read. Examples: Folktales, Poetry, Fiction, Non-fiction, Historical fiction, Animals. Memoir is a type of genre. Characteristics of memoir include: Written in 1st Person (so that means…..) Focuses and reflects on the relationship between the writer and a particular person, place, animal, or object. The writer writes about his relationships with others and places that had an impact on him.

It is focuses on a brief period of time in the writer’s life that he/she wishes to write about. The writer discusses their feelings and thoughts The writer includes their emotions: happy, mad or sad about what had happened. It makes the subject of the memoir come alive. INCLUDES REFLECTION!!!!

5 Memoir characteristics continued…
The memoir engages the reader in a conversational way. So the reader feels like the writer is speaking to them. Memoirs are written in such a way that the reader can learn something from it—we call this life lesson a theme. The writer uses descriptive language to appeal to the readers senses. This is called, sensory imagery: Smell, touch, hear, see, taste.

8 Guided Reading: Today we will be reading One Step at a Time While I pass out…. 1. Infer what you think the story is about based on the title. 2. Why do you think there is a separate box on the right side of the story? What is it? As I read to you, I want you to think about the characteristics in the book that make it a memoir. Please take notes on these characteristics to help you with the following activity.

9 Activity: With the person sitting next to you, please create a list of all the characteristics you see in the story that you think make it a memoir. I’d like you all to have a MINIMUM of five examples. *Use your notes from when I read aloud to the class that are found on the memoir itself.
