2 Jesus and the 2nd Psalm

3 Jesus and the 2nd Psalm Man’s defiance (1-3)
God is ruler over all the nations (Psa. 22:28) He has the right to expect worship & obedience (Psa. 72:11) People don’t like being obligated to listen to God (Jer. 5:5) Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice?” (Exo. 5:2) Nebuchadnezzar had to learn that he’s not the top (Dan. 4) Parable: “We do not want this man to reign over us.” (Luke 19:14) No human power can stop God’s decree (Job 42:2) Messiah (Hebrew), Christ (Greek), Anointed (English) God anointed Jesus (Luke 3:21-22; Luke 4:16-21; Acts 10:37-38) Yet powerful people were unable to stop his plan (Acts 4:23-28)

4 Jesus and the 2nd Psalm God laughs and carries out his plan (4-6)
God is above the highest earthly positions (Isa. 40:22-24) When man thinks he can stop God’s plan, God laughs God will overcome them and judge them And he will carry out his plans If his plan is to set up a king, he will set up a king As he had done with Israel – Saul, David, etc Equally certain was his plan to set up a spiritual King to reign over spiritual Zion (Heb. 12:22)

5 Jesus and the 2nd Psalm God’s decree concerning his Anointed (7-9)
The Anointed One is God’s Son The Hebrew writer applies this uniquely to Christ Not even angels received this unique designation (Heb. 1:5) No man has received his unique anointing (Heb. 1:8-9) “You are my Son, today I have begotten you” is quoted three times His coming to earth (Heb. 1:5-6) His appointment as our high priest (Heb. 5:5) His resurrection (Acts 13:32-33) Jesus’ authority over and judgment upon the nations (Rev. 2:26-27; 12:5; 19:15)

6 Jesus and the 2nd Psalm Warning and blessing
“Kiss the Son” – seek his favor, follow his commands This is the only way (John 3:36; John 14:6) Godly fear God has warned us to kiss the Son– if we fear him, we will Saints have fled for refuge (Heb. 6:18)

7 Jesus and the 2nd Psalm Summary
Those who think they can reject God’s rule and his plan are mistaken God laughs at man’s feeble attempt to overrule him; he carries out his plan God said he would give his Son authority over the nations, and he did We must listen, therefore, to the Son – this is the only way God has provided to be saved
