Explain about how English curriculum is split into Early Years Foundation stage (EYFS) Year 1, Year 2, Years 3/4, Year 5/6

2. Year 1 and Year 2 Curriculum
Year 1 Writing Composition
Pupils should be taught to:
write sentences by:
saying out loud what they are going to write about
composing a sentence orally before writing it
sequencing sentences to form short narratives
re-reading what they have written to check that it makes sense
discuss what they have written with the teacher or other pupils
read aloud their writing clearly enough to be heard by their peers and the teacher.
Year 2 Writing Composition
Pupils should be taught to:
write for different purposes by:
consider what they are going to write before beginning by:
planning or saying out loud what they are going to write about
encapsulating what they want to say, sentence by sentence
evaluating their writing with the teacher and other pupils
re-reading to check that their writing makes sense
proof-reading to check for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation
read aloud what they have written with appropriate intonation to make the meaning clear.
When you delve into the different parts of the curriculum for example, Writing has many different parts including spelling, handwriting, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation and finally composition, Spoken Language, Reading – word reading and comprehension

You can see from my orange lines that there are a lot of areas where the Year 1 and the Year 2 curriculum are very similar and where teachers can easily knit the two curriculums together.

It’s easy here as the year groups follow the same curriculum. What about a cross key stage mix?

discussing writing similar to that which they are planning to write in order to understand and learn from its structure, vocabulary and grammar
discussing and recording ideas
composing and rehearsing sentences orally
assessing the effectiveness of their own and others’ writing and suggesting improvements
proposing changes to grammar and vocabulary to improve consistency
proof-read for spelling and punctuation errors
read aloud their own writing, to a group or the whole class, using appropriate intonation and controlling the tone and volume so that the meaning is clear.
Here we have Year 2 and Year ¾ curriculum for English.

Again, you can see that the links can be made between the two. Where there are skills in the other curriculum teachers can choose to teach separately, consolidate learning from previous year and check understanding or expose children to that higher level skill or learning activity in an age appropriate way, in order to lay the foundations for it to be assessed the following year.
