We want to understand how threats to people’s reputations, privacy, relationships and physical safety manifest themselves online and raise awareness of the consequences. 9/15/2018 Headline The level of online risks and consequences held steady while encouraging signs emerged as people began to evolve their approaches towards the challenges of negative online interactions. The level of online risks as measured by the Digital Civility Index remained steady since 2016, although DCI fell in Wave 1 countries by four points.* Overall, concerns about risks fell and timing since the last risk occurred was further in the past. Targets of online risks often named a person they knew and familiarity with the perpetrator was associated with an increased number of risks. A loss of trust remained the most common consequence of online risks. Positive signs emerged… People were less confrontational and more likely to stand down rather than retaliate in response to being abused. Most people stated they actively tried to respect and protect themselves, and to a lesser extent, others online. 9/15/2018 1. Key Findings The DCI held steady at 65% The addition of new risks and countries had a small impact on YOY trends. DCI would have fallen three points to 62% without the changes. Wave 1 countries experienced a four point decline in DCI falling from 65% to 61% without including the new risks. Category and individual risk levels were held steady with Unwanted Contact being the top risk (41%) followed by Hoaxes, scams, frauds (27%). Intrusive risks continued as the top risk category up 6 points to 56%, with the rise driven by the addition of Hoaxes, scams and frauds. Recency and concern about risks fell The percentage of people who reported the most recent risk happened within the past month fell from 38% to 29%. There was a coincident drop in concern with 12% fewer people being more concerned while 9% more said they were less concerned. The most worrisome risks were Hoaxes, scams, frauds (28%) and damage to person reputation (25%) and online harassment (21%). © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Key Findings Targets of online risks often named a person they knew Overall, 61% had some familiar with the perpetrators. 36% knew the perpetrator personally (17% were family or friends and 19% acquaintances). 25% were people they knew online only and 37% were strangers. Family and friends accounted for a high percentage of perpetrators among those who were cyberbullied (41%) or discriminated (36%) against. Familiarity with the perpetrator in real life was associated with an increased risk of harassment or abuse. 53% of people had met the perpetrator in real life about the same as Those who had met the perpetrator in real life had a 66% higher average number of risks (4.9) than those who had not met the perpetrator (2.9). Among those who had met the perpetrator, 76% knew them before the risk happened. Those who had met the perpetrator before the risk reported more Behavioral or Reputational risks. Conversely, those who felt they were treated unsafely and uncivilly (12%) suffered much higher rates of online risks and consequences. People reported treating others with respect but… In response to online risks, 71% said they always treated others with respect and dignity, 60% had respect for others point of view 52% stood up for themselves. There was a large disconnect between how people said they treated others compared to what they reported witnessing others doing. Only 19% said they always witnessed people treating others with respect and 15% always respected others point of view. Confrontation and retaliation fell in response to online risks 10% of respondents reported confronting the perpetrator, down eleven points, while retaliation dropped from 17% to 9% since 2016. Items in the Civility Challenge rose toward the top of actions taken in response to online risks. All items were in the top ten actions taken: stood up for themselves (ranked 3rd), paused before replying (ranked 4th), and defended someone who was treated unsafe or uncivil (ranked 6th). © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. Key Findings A loss of trust remained the most common consequence The level and rank order of consequences were held steady since % of respondents were less trusting of people online and 28% less trusting offline. One in four people tried to be more constructive in their criticism of others online. More people knew where to find help with online risks 45% knew where to find help with managing online risks up 8 points from a year ago. Confidence stayed high as nearly half (46%) said they were extremely or very confident in their ability to handle online risks. However, among those who asked for help 41% found it extremely, very or somewhat difficult getting the help they needed. Parents ranked highest on responsibility and trust Parents were trusted the most (29%) and considered most responsible (20%) for ensuring the safety of individuals and families online. Software companies scored average on trust (9%) and responsibility (7%). Without the new risks, DCI would have held steady. Other country DCI scores were similar to 2016. All Latam countries had above average DCI scores (71 or higher). With the exception of Brazil, a noticeable proportion of online risks were perpetrated by family and friends. While the top risks in each country were consistent, risks people worried about most showed more variation. Doxing was particularly worrisome in Japan and China. The French were most worried about Online harassment while Cyberbullying was the top worry in Germany. Terrorism recruiting was the most worrisome risk in Hungary. Concern about online risks declined across all countries with the biggest drops occurring in Turkey, USA and Mexico Russians and Mexicans reported a big increase in having met the perpetrator in real life. The reverse was true in China, Brazil and UK. Adult and Teens highlights Adults & Teens had the same level of exposure to online risks The type of risks affecting each group differed with Adults more prone to Intrusive and Sexual risks; Teens were more likely to have encountered Behavioral risks. Teens reported much higher (73%, 57%) incidence of risks happening to family and friends. Teens experienced risks more recently and more frequently than Adults Familiarity with perpetrators posed more problems for Teens Family and friends represented 22% of the unsafe and uncivil behavior directed at Teens compared to only 13% for Adults. Meeting the perpetrator in real life was more common for Teens (60%, 46%). Behavioral risks were more common for Teens in cases when they had met the perpetrator before the risk. Teens placed their faith and trust in parents to keep them safe Adults looked to the national government and ISPs to keep them safe online. Teens were more active in responding to online risks than Adults Teens were more likely to take action in response to a risk (90%, 84%), defended others (65%, 59%), were more likely to ask for help (77%, 60%) and knew where to find help (56%, 33%). © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. Concern about risks were higher among females (42%, 34%), with harassment and sexual risks representing the largest gap with males. Females were more likely to have met the perpetrator in real life (55%, 51%) than males. Consequences from risks were higher for females than males Loss of trust online (44%, 36%), and offline (32%, 24%) was higher for females. The top eleven consequences were all higher for females. Females were more likely to take action than males Females were better at reducing shared information (43%, 36%) and tightening privacy settings on social media (43, 34%).
