5 Were The Germans held responsible for the crimes they committed during WWII? Explain.
Yes, they held the Nuremberg trials, individuals were going to be held responsible for war crimes, even if they were following orders.

6 Why did the United States and the Soviet Union become enemies after WWII?
The Soviet Union hoped to spread communism and the United States was in favor of capitalism and democracy. This race to control countries was called the Cold War and the U.S. used a policy called containment.

7 What was the purpose of The Truman Doctrine
What was the purpose of The Truman Doctrine? How did the Marshall plan fit with the goals of the Truman Doctrine? The Purpose of the Truman Doctrine was to give aid to countries fighting against Communism. The Marshall Plan gave aid to help Western European countries recover from war.

8 How Would women that had been employed during WWII react to being asked to give up their job when the men return home? Some women would be okay with giving up their job, they were happy the war was over. Other women would be upset with the Government and want to keep their jobs.

9 Why do you think that President Truman issued an executive order to end segregation in the armed forces? Truman issued an executive order because it was not fair to treat African-Americans differently and because Congress would not have passed a law.

Truman used the “Fair deal” to capitalize on the success of the “Square deal” and the “New deal”. He was trying to get elected in 1948

What is important about the 38th Parallel? Why did President Truman NOT want to bomb China? The 38th Parallel is the dividing line between the Communist North and capitalist South Korea. Truman did not want to bomb China because he did not want to start WWIII

McCarthy gained fame by claiming to know about communists in government and hunting them down. He ruined many innocent lives. Compared to a modern day Witch Hunt

Each Country wanted to be the most powerful in the world and have the most powerful weapon.

Sputnik caused the Americans to launch their own space program. We feared the Soviets would use space technology to spy or attack us.

Women criticized what they were allowed to do, jobs they were allowed to have. Writers like Salinger and Kerouac who criticized the 50’s in emphasis on making money and conformity. Beatniks, poets of society.
