Listening Guides 0:00 1st movement A-B-A
0:00 1st movement A-B-A The first movement is Adagio sostenuto, an Italian term meaning “sustained”. It is a style in which notes are sustained beyond their normal sound value (Mackenzie). The sonata opens with a C# minor bass note accompanied by the right hand in a triplet figuration, this repeated triplet gives the song its hypnotic, ghostly feeling. The first movement is written in C# minor. The movement is played pianissimo and the loudest it gets is piano (Fishko).

D flat major

Listening Guides 6:00 2nd movement scherzo and trio (Jones).
6:00 2nd movement scherzo and trio (Jones). The second movement is Allegretto which is a direction in music moving at a medium speed. This movement is where Beethoven breaks from the normal sonata pattern of fast, slow, fast – here he moves from slow to medium and will eventually finish with fast.. The key of the second movement is D flat major, which is unrelated to the overall key of c# minor. (Kennedy). There is a feeling of a building tempo and uneasiness about the second movement. The strikes on the piano are a bit faster and a bit harder.

Listening Guides 8:06 3rd movement Sonata Form
8:06 3rd movement Sonata Form The third movement is Presto agitato which means in Italian “very quick and with excitement”, Beethoven here finishes with his fast portion of the sonata. Also written in C# minor, repeating the first movement. The most technical of the three there are many fast arpeggios and strongly accented notes and fortissimo passages (Jones). These combined help to create the feeling of need and urgency in the piece.
