1 Study for five minutes for your test.
Warm Up Study for five minutes for your test.

2 Standard S7L4 d Describe the characteristics of Earth’s major terrestrial biomes and aquatic communities.

3 Land Biomes Different ecosystems are home to different kinds of organisms. What do you think of when you think of polar bears?

4 The Earth’s Land Biomes
Imagine yourself in a hot, dry, dusty place. What land biome do you think you are located in? A desert is different from other places because of its abiotic factors and biotic factors. What are some abiotic factors of a desert and why are these classified as abiotic factors? Climate is the average weather conditions for an area over a long period of time. What are some biotic factors of a desert and why are these classified as biotic factors? Areas that have similar abiotic factors usually have similar biotic factors.

5 Biomes What is the definition for a biome?
A biome contains related ecosystems. Give some examples of biomes that have related ecosystems. Look on page List the major biomes of Earth.

6 Forest Forest biomes are often found in areas that have mild temperatures and plenty of rain. The kind of forest biome that develops depends on the areas climate and rainfall. Three forest biomes: 1. temperate deciduous forest 2. coniferous forest 3. tropical rain forest

7 Temperate Deciduous Forest
Trees that are deciduous change colors of their leaves in fall and also loss them. Deciduous trees shed their leaves to save water during winter or dry seasons. What animals would live in the temperate deciduous forest?

8 Coniferous Forest Coniferous trees are called conifers, they produce seeds in cones. They also have needles for leaves. The leaves have a waxy coat that has three functions: 1. keeps leaves from drying out 2. keeps needles from being damaged by cold winters. 3. helps deep many of their leaves year-around. What types of animals would you find in a coniferous forest.

9 Tropical Rain Forests Tropical rain forests have more biological diversity than other places on Earth have. What does this mean? More than 100 different kinds of trees grow in an area about one-fourth the size of a football field.
