1
Cells All living things are made of cells
2
Cells have many different parts and each part has a specific purpose
3
Cell membrane – gives the cell shape
Cell membrane – gives the cell shape. It is porous and allows molecules to pass in and out of the cell
4
Nucleus – controls what goes on in the cell
5
Cytoplasm – a jelly-like material, made up mostly of water – supports the “guts” of the cell
6
Vacuoles – stores the cell’s food, water, minerals, and waste
Note that the plant cell usually only has one large vacuole, while the animal cell has many smaller vacuoles
7
Mitochondria – “The powerhouse of the cell” - produces the energy the cell needs to survive
8
Brainpop
9
The plant cells have two parts that animal cells do not have
10
Living things grow because their cells multiply
Living things grow because their cells multiply. This process is called mitosis. Only show 2 minutes – show first
12
The smallest living things in the world are only one cell
This is an amoeba eating a paramecium – both one celled creatures
