General shutter speeds
With T or B control
21
Putting it all together
When you use a certain size aperture with a certain shutter speed you get a properly exposed negative!
22
Putting it all together
Aperture: Controls intensity of light passing thru the lens to strike film/ sensor Shutter speed: Controls duration of light passing thru the lens to strike film/ sensor. Specified by f-stops. “f” stands for fraction
25
Putting it all together
1. f/22 The lens opening that gives the greatest depth of field The lens opening that gives the smallest depth of field The fastest shutter speed on most cameras is The slowest shutter speed before you need a tripod is What setting do you use on a camera for a timed exposure 1. f/2 1. f/60 1. T
26
Putting it all together
What is the difference between “T” timed and “B” bulb exposure Difference is what causes the shutter to close. “B” closes when the “shutter release” is not pushed anymore “T” will stay open until the “shutter release is pressed a 2nd time.

Basic Camera Care Camera/ lens storage- safe place locker home Not plastic bag don’t take lens off Film storage- Cool dry place (refrigerator) Battery storage On/Off- Keep OFF or in ‘L’ = lock = off Lens cleaning- Only non abrasive wipes not shirt or Kleenex UV filters- buy for $20 saves your lens from scratching
37
Basic Camera Care Your choice
Cap & cap keeper- attach it so you don’t loose it Program/Mode options- M= you control aperture, shutter speeds and light meter Auto/Manual Focus on lens- AF- Auto Focus- camera controls focus MF- Manual Focus- you control focus Shutter speeds/ Shutter dial- inside on newer cameras outside on older models- on top Your choice
38
Basic Camera Care B, or Bulb mode- as long as you hold down the shutter button the film will be exposed Aperture Dial- On Lens/ inside the camera ISO/ASA- Film speeds *400 ISO- on older cameras you need to set this. Manual or Power rewind- older cameras press safety button first!
39
Camera and Correct Exposure
Exposure- the amount of light (aperture) and the duration of time (shutter speeds) that the light is allowed to expose the film (or imaging chip on digital camera). Exposure is controlled by three things- I. Apertures II. Shutter speeds III. Film Speed Light meter “reads” info Test strip!
40
Aperture/ F-stop? Aperture is: the hole in the lens that opens & closes to allow different amounts of light in Aperture setting controls 2 things- 1. Amount of Light- opens/ closes 2. Depth of field- how much of the scene is in focus (in front and behind) 32 22 8 11 16 5.6 4 2 Technical Artistic
41
Shutter Speed? Shutter speed is: the amount of time, in fractions of a second, that the shutter door opens and closes to allow light to hit the film or imaging chip Shutter speed settings controls 2 things- 1. Amount of Light- that hits the film or imaging chip 2. How image is captured- Motion (freeze/ blur) Technical Artistic
42
Film Speed? Film speed controls 1 thing- 1. Sensitivity to light

Scenario 1: You are in the auditorium taking pictures of the musical. You are in the audience and you want your BFF, who is on the front of the stage, to be the only thing in focus. Priority is: ____________________________ you originally set up the camera to f-4 and 1/500 The camera says you don’t have enough light…. You’d change the exposure to: __________________ The camera says you have too much light… you’d change the exposure to: _____________________
