Should Quebec Separate?
Brainstorm with the person beside you. Write down ALL the positives and ALL the negatives that you can think of about Quebec separating from Canada.

Pros Increased power – can make their own decisions Increased trade opportunities (Quebec is a strong exporter) Make French-Canadian nationalists happy Strengthen French language and culture Fewer French-English tensions More representation for Western provinces in federal government.

Cons Quebec would no longer receive federal grants for assistance The English speakers (Anglophone) may leave Quebec Foreign and domestic investment might drop Quebec may be asked to continue to pay a portion of Canada’s debt

What was the Indian Act The laws that the federal government used to oversee Indian status, local First Nations governments and management of reserve land and communal money. allows the government to control most aspects of aboriginal life: Indian status, land, resources, wills, education… Was first introduced in 1876

What was the Indian Act The Indian Act aimed to assimilate First Nations Residential schools Women who married Non-Aboriginals lost their status Those with university degrees lost status Today, many changes have been made to the act that will help protect aboriginal rights

Medical care hunting and fishing rights annual treaty payments. Aboriginals did not have to pay income tax Aboriginals were given special status Cons Denied the right to own their own land Couldn’t vote Lost status if they lived off the reserve, joined the military, obtained higher education, married a non-Indian Many traditional activities were outlawed (potluck) Reserve land was consistently made smaller
