Born in Plains, GA Served in U. S. Navy Managed family’s peanut farm Political career began in 1962

Political Career In 1962, he was elected to Georgia state senate.
He served two terms as a senator. Elected governor in 1970. Carter defeated incumbent Republican President Gerald Ford in the 1976 presidential election.

Presidency Opened diplomatic relations with China Established human rights as a cornerstone of U.S. foreign policy. Helped negotiate a peace agreement between Israel and Egypt.

After the presidency… Carter has worked continually to promote democracy and human rights around the world. He and along with representatives from this Carter Center have monitored elections in 21 countries , fought disease and starvation all over the world. In 2002, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
