What are the different organ systems within your body?

2 Levels of organization
The levels of organization within the human body consists of cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, and then finally the organism

3 Cells A cell is the basic unit of structure for a living thing
The human body contains about 100 trillion cells

4 Cells continued Almost all of the cells of the human body contain the same basic parts Cell membrane Nucleus cytoplasm

5 Functions of cells Cells carry on the processes that keep organisms alive Molecules from digested food undergo changes that release energy that the cells can use

6 Tissues A tissue – is a group of cells that perform the same function
There are four types of tissue Muscle Nervous Connective epithelial

7 Muscle Tissue Muscle tissue can contract or shorten
Muscle tissue makes the parts of the body move

8 Nervous Tissue While muscle tissue moves the body, nervous tissue directs and controls this process Nervous tissue carries electrical messages back and forth from the brain to other parts of the body

9 Connective Tissue Connective tissue provides support for your body and connects all of its parts Bone tissue and fat tissue are examples of connective tissue

10 Epithelial Tissue Epithelial tissue covers the surface of your body inside and out Skin, and lining of your digestive system are examples

11 Organs An organ is a structure that is made up of different kinds of tissues The job of an organ is usually more complex than that of a tissue

12 Organ Systems Each organ in your body is part of an organ system
An organ system is a group of organs that work together carrying out major functions
