Abstract Expressionism
Mid 1940s – early 1960s The abstract expressionists were inspired by the surrealists Abstract expressionism was the first art that was considered properly American Abstract expressionism was made up of two general groups: the action painters; and the colour field painters Abstract Expressionism

Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Clyfford Still, Barnett Newman, Franz Kline, Arshile Gorky, Phillip Guston, Lee Krasner, Robert Motherwell, William Baziotes, Adolph Gottlieb, Richard Pousette-Dart and David Smith.
