1 Adaptations and Habitat
Objective: Students will demonstrate an understanding of adaptations and how they help organisms survive and describe similarities and differences between living things and their life processes.

2 Biome- A community of plants and animals living together in a particular climate or region.
Rainforest Prairie or grassland Tundra Ocean Desert Forest wetland

3 Ecosystems and Biomes

4 Tundra Vast, treeless, short growing season Low shrubs, moss, lichen
Habitats of the world- Scientists divided the Earth into regions. The factors that determine a biome are latitude, altitude, soil, temperatures, precipitation, sunlight, plants and animals. There are 7 major biomes. Tundra Vast, treeless, short growing season Low shrubs, moss, lichen Musk ox, snowy owl, arctic fox Thick fur and blubber Rich in oil Mining and oil drilling impact life

5 2. Desert- Dry, less than 10 inches of precipitation per year
Hot or cold Scorpions, snakes, lizards , camel Cactus, yucca, tumbleweed Animals sleep during day, store water(camel fat in humps) Building impacts life

6 3. Wetlands…bog,,,swamp….marsh
Land saturated by water all year Grasses, trees, cattails Everglades Florida Alligators, crocodiles, many birds and insects Draining and building, global warming are impacting life

7 4. Forests…….Deciduous……Coniferous
Needle trees (Coniferous) Falling leaves, 4 seasons (deciduous), temperate Pine, oak, maple, fern, poison ivy, moss Deer, caribou, squirrel, geese, turkey Logging and pollution impact life

8 5. Grassland…Prairie…..Savannah
Tall grass, few trees, wild flowers, wheat, best farming soil Great Plains Hawk, bison, many birds , giraffe (Africa) Over-farming the land has great impact

9 6. Rainforest Large amounts of rain, near the equator, thick layers of growth South America- largest -Amazon Vines, trees (canopy), colorful flowers Boa constrictor, macaw, gorilla, tree frog, insects, butterflies Deforestation has the greatest impact on life

10 7. Oceans Vast body of salt water, covers ¾ of Earth
Atlantic, Pacific, Southern, Arctic, Indian Jellyfish, whales, seals, fish, coral, Kelp, seaweed Over fishing and pollution impact life

11 ADAPTATIONS! Animal Adaptations Animal Tricksters
Plant Adaptations Mimicry Hide and Seek Archer Fish

12 Behavioral Adaptations
Adaptation- A physical feature or a behavior that helps a living thing survive Physical Adaptations Behavioral Adaptations
