3. Why Transfer? Students choose the transfer path for many reasons:
Undecided on academic or career goals
Have not met requirements for freshman admission
Are not ready or able to leave home
Want the affordability of community colleges
Want additional academic preparation or exploration in specific academic areas
The BEST path to transfer to UC/CSU is via the CCC
90% of students who transfer to UC come from California Community Colleges
1/3 of students who receive a Bachelor’s Degree at a UC campus started at a junior college
2/3 of students who receive a Bachelor’s Degree at a CSU campus started at a junior college

5. CSU: Student Transfer Agreement Reform Act (STAR Act)
Students are expected to complete the transfer associate degree with a minimum GPA of and to meet the minimum CSU admission requirements
Students may apply to the CSU system with junior status and will be given priority consideration when applying to a California State University campus and to a particular program that is designated as similar to the student’s community college major
No guarantee of admission to a specific campus or major
Provides assurance that a student can finish the remaining coursework within 2 years
Completion of the BA/BS in no more than 60 additional units assuming the student is not completing a minor

The Associate Degree for Transfer (AA-T/AS-T) degrees target the top 36 transfer majors offered at the CSU, which will cover 91% of the students transferring

10. Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC)
Series of courses that satisfy the lower-division requirements at both UC and CSU
Most helpful to students who want to keep their options open — those who know they want to transfer but have not yet decided upon a particular institution, campus or major
All IGETC coursework does not have to be completed at the same community college
Unless the course is sequential

It is NOT an admissions requirement, nor does it guarantee admission to the campus or program of choice
However, completing the IGETC requirements may improve your chances for admission to a competitive campus and/or program
If you have an area of study in mind, visit the Explore Majors section at the ASSIST website and click on prompts to identify the majors for which IGETC is recommended
IGETC courses must be completed with a grade of C or better

12. I’m going to Community College… do I really need to take AP classes/exams?
An acceptable score on an Advanced Placement (AP) test can be applied to IGETC
Test results can only satisfy one subject, with the exception of Spanish
Spanish can satisfy both IGETC and major requirements

13. Admission to UC as a Transfer Student
Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG)
Excluding Berkeley, Los Angeles and San Diego
Students can use the UC Transfer Admission Planner (UC TAP) as early as their Freshman year
You can only apply TAG to one UC campus: Davis, Irvine, Merced, Riverside, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz.
Minimum eligibility requirements for transfer to a University of California
60 semester (90 quarter) units of transferable coursework semester prior to transferring
2.4 minimum college GPA (3.4 average GPA; will depend on Major & College)
7-course pattern with a “C” or better
In addition, transfer applicants should complete:
Lower-division general education requirements
Lower-division major preparation courses, “UC gives high priority to students who complete major coursework early in their academic career.

A web-based tool to help students plan and track their academic plan to satisfy transfer requirements to any UC campus
Students can begin their plan as soon as they register at the community college
Allows students to communicate with their community college counselors and UC representatives

15. Best Advice for Students Who Want to Transfer
#1 Improve college readiness: Students should take rigorous college preparation courses throughout high school
Take math all four years in high school
Take advantage of the early assessments programs
CSU’s Early Assessment Program (EAP) CAASPP exam in 11th grade English and Mathematics.
Prepare for possible Community college assessment/placement exams
Students should consider concurrent enrollment opportunities which enable students to experience college while in high school
Students should consider taking advantage of community college summer sessions following high school graduation

17. More Advice… #2 Research your options
Not all CCCs offer the same programs or opportunities
Some CCCs offer more transferable courses in a major(s)
Explore colleges and majors at

Competition for CCC courses is increasing
The CCC matriculation process has several steps that should be completed early in the spring semester (January) of 12th grade in order to register for classes when summer/fall registrations that open in late April or May
Use summer and winter sessions to move quicker through required coursework

18. Even More Advice… #4 If possible, attend full time, work part time
Four strong predictors for success – based on a 2015 study out of the University of Michigan:
1. Full-time enrollment
2. Continuous enrollment
3. Work no more than 15 hours per week
4. Complete transfer level English and math in first year of college
Helps to utilize financial aid efficiently
Consult financial aid staff at your college for expert advice on grants, loans and scholarships
Consider deferring Cal Grant B until transfer to a 4-year school, if receiving a BOG grant

19. Yup, there’s still more…
#5 Students are advised to decide on a major and campus no later than the start of sophomore year at CCC
Know which campus(es) and major(s) they want to target and which have transfer guarantee programs
Some majors such as STEM (i.e.- engineering and biology) require that students declare their intent in their freshman year
Follow recommended curriculum for majors ( including competitive GPA
Students need to make sure they are following the appropriate GE pattern for their intended major and campus
It is more important to take lower-division classes in your major than to just complete general education

20. Last bit of advice… #6 Student should be advised to work:
Work closely with your CCC counselors, transfer center staff and CSU or UC rep to develop a transfer plan early
Meet with CCC counselor and transfer center once per semester to make sure you are on track.
Develop, then follow, a plan, but update it regularly
ASSIST (assist.org) is helpful but no substitute for personal academic advisement
Review the information on the website of the CSU or UC campuses you are interested in transferring to
