He was a Roman Catholic monk living in Germany who became angry about a church practice known as… indulgences = paying the church to be forgiven for your bad deeds. Martin Luther wanted to spark a change in the Catholic church so he wrote the 95 Thesis and nailed them on the door of the church at Wittenburg. - this started the Reformation = a change in the way the Church taught and practiced Christianity.

With help from Johannes Gutenberg’s printing press, Luther’s ideas spread throughout Europe and new forms of the Christian religion formed. - The Protestant religion was formed by Christians who objected to some of the Roman Catholic ways. 2. At the Council of Trent, the Roman Catholic Church agreed to make some changes. - ex. End the sale of indulgences

Under Queen Elizabeth I, England became the leading Protestant power in Europe At the same time, Spain was the leading Catholic power. The king of Spain built an armada = fleet of warships and attacked England. He hoped to bring all of Europe back under Catholic control.
