BLOOD CELLS & BLOOD TYPING
2
Hematophobia = fear of blood
Blood transports substances & maintains homeostasis in body Hematophobia = fear of blood
3
Blood & Blood Cells Blood - type of CONNECTIVE TISSUE
2 basic components: CELLS (rbc, wbc, platelets) = 45% Plasma (water, proteins, amino acids..etc) = 55%
4
HEMATOPOEISIS formation of blood cells occurs in bone marrow Old blood cells are destroyed by liver & spleen - phagocytosis
5
EPO (erythropoietin) - hormone that increases production of RBC’s.
In the first part of a two-night interview broadcast Thursday, disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong admitted to Oprah Winfrey that he took banned substances, including EPO, during all seven of his Tour de France victories. What is EPO? (Gizmodo Article)
6
Hematocrit - volume of blood cells in a sample, should be 45%.
Remaining fluid is plasma (55%). To determine %’s , blood is placed in a centrifuge Heavier cells settle to bottom of sample.
7
PHLEBOTOMIST person trained to draw blood from a patient for clinical or medical testing, transfusions, donations, or research.
8
PLASMA liquid portion of blood (92% water)
Also contains nutrients, gases, vitamins, & proteins
9
PART A. TYPES OF BLOOD CELLS
11
RBCs & PLATELETS
12
Seratonin = vasoconstrictor 2. Platelet plug formation
3 EVENTS IN HEMOSTASIS 1. Blood Vessel Spasm Seratonin = vasoconstrictor 2. Platelet plug formation 3. Blood coagulation conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin (thrombin - enzyme that causes conversion)
13
COAGULATION - the thickening of blood to form a clot (hematoma)
14
THROMBUS – blood clot (abnormal)
EMBOLUS – when the clot moves to another place. * Cerebral Embolism - when a blood clot goes to the brain * Pulmonary Embolism - when a blood clot goes to the lungs
15
NEUTROPHIL
16
EOSINOPHIL
17
BASOPHIL
18
LYMPHOCYTE
19
MONOCYTE
21
PART B. DIFFERENTIAL WBC COUNT
22
LEUKEMIA
23
EOSINOPHILIA
24
Blood Type is Controlled by 3 Alleles
PART C. ABO BLOOD TYPING 4 Possible Blood Types Blood Type is Controlled by 3 Alleles Alleles: A, B, O A & B are codominant O is recessive
25
Genotypes Blood types Type A = AA or AO Type B = BB or BO Type AB = AB
Type O = OO Blood types
26
Table 12.03
27
Why is O the “universal donor?
TYPE A TYPE B TYPE AB TYPE O
29
Blood Type Test
30
PART D. – Rh BLOOD TYPING
32
Rh Factor A person can either be Rh + or Rh – (positive is dominant)
33
Erythroblastosis Fetalis
35
Dermatographia: Immune system releases excess amounts of histamine causing welts to appear when lightly scratched. Cold Urticaria (essentially meaning "cold hives") is anywhere hives or large red welts form on the skin after exposure to a cold stimulus.
