History and Rules 1. Volleyball was invented by William
Morgan in 1895. Volleyball is played by two teams of six players on the court. - A maximum of three hits are allowed on each side. Consecutive hits by one player is not allowed.

2. Facing the net, players rotate clockwise on a side-out. Games are played to 25 points with rally serving and a team must win by two points. - Perfect play is bump, set, spike. 3. Team rotates each time they win the serve. The ball hitting the boundary lines is good or in.

4. A ball (including a serve) may be played off the net. 5. The server can’t touch or step over the end-line during a serve The server may serve any place along the end-line. 6. The server can back up as far as he or she wishes when serving.

A player cannot touch the net with any part of their body or clothes. 7. Points are awarded to the team who lands the ball in the opponents court or to the team who does not make any rule violations.

Vocabulary Serve: Contact with the ball to initiate play.
Side Out: A side out is awarded when the serving team violates a rule. Replay: The act of putting the ball in play without awarding a point.

Vocabulary Continued Ace: A serve, which lands without being touched.
Block: A player or players block the ball into the opponents court. Rotation: Shifting positions in a clockwise direction on a side out. Set: The act of positioning the ball so a teammate can spike the ball into the other court.

Vocabulary Continued Spike: A one handed hit that is hit hard
from a height above the top of the net. Bump Pass: A ball played off the forearms under control. Foot Fault: A serving violation; stepping on or over the end line on a serve. Rally Scoring: A team gets a point on each serve.
