Trainer Courses
Are typically two-day trainings put on in an outdoor setting by Master Educators. Trainer courses are designed to help you better understand and teach Leave No Trace skills and ethics.
Master Educator Courses
A Master Educator course is typically five-days in length and designed for people who are actively teaching others backcountry skills or providing recreation information to the public. Successful graduates of the Master Educator course have the ability to train others in Leave No Trace skills as well as facilitate trainer courses.

13. What is a Trainer Course?

14. Trainer Course Requirements
Trainer course core curriculum must include the following:
A minimum of 16 total hours of experiential instruction, 10 hours of which must be conducted in the field.
One night camping in a front-country and/or backcountry location is strongly recommended.
The role and function of a Leave No Trace Trainer
The principles and ethics of Leave No Trace
Teaching skills and techniques and student learning styles
At least one student led teaching exercise by each participant
Overview and history of the international Leave No Trace program
The role and function of Leave No Trace Canada and its relationship with the Leave No Trace the Center for Outdoor Ethics

15. Trainer Course Requirements
Requirements for Master Educators to facilitate Trainer courses include:
Current membership with Leave No Trace Canada
Submission of signed Individual Training Agreement
Minimum Standard First Aid Certificate with BCLS
Appropriate levels of individual tort insurance, OR
Insured through sponsoring organization
Experience as an outdoor leader

16. Trainer Course Requirements
Additional requirements for Master Educators to facilitate Trainer courses include:
Submission of all required paperwork upon completion of each course, including:
Membership forms and associated funds for participants
Course Roster
Participant Information Sheet
Disclaimer and Liability Disclosure Form
Use of a co-instructor for all Trainer courses exceeding 12 participants
Strict adherence to the National Training Guidelines

17. Trainer Course Requirements
Requirements for organizations to facilitate Trainer courses include:
Partner in good standing with Leave No Trace Canada
Strict adherence to the National Training Guidelines
Use only Master Educator(s) in good standing with Leave No Trace Canada
Appropriate levels of insurance as outlined in National Training Guidelines
Disseminate and submit to Leave No Trace Canada the required Leave No Trace documentation for new Trainers, including;
Individual Training Agreements for Trainers
Leave No Trace Canada Memberships and dues per participant
Disclaimer of Liability and Assumption of Risk Form
Personal Information Consent Form
Participant Information Sheet

How to run a Trainer Course…
Complete a Master Educator Course
Sign and submit Individual Training agreement
An Organization Training Agreement must be signed and submitted if Trainer courses are being run through an organization
Inform Leave No Trace Canada of your course and submit proof of requisite insurance and risk management policies as required
Ensure you possess a minimum Standard First Aid and BCLS (CPR) training
Ensure you possess adequate insurance coverage
Read the National Training Guidelines
Follow Trainer Course Core Curriculum
Submit requisite documentation upon completion of each course

Each participant will teach a minute presentation on a Leave No Trace Principle
Teaching sessions are intended to build confidence in teaching and facilitating Leave No Trace information
