An introduction for students and families

2 Opportunity to earn college credit
Grades 7-12 College-ready students Many college course options Public colleges are free Private colleges may include small cost RHS will include a $40 fee

3 Why take College Credit Plus?
Take college courses that satisfy your high school graduation requirements If you have completed your high school graduation requirements and want to begin college work You want to explore college and take a course in a subject that interests you or is not available at your high school Get a head start on a college degree

4 Process to take part in CCP
Receive information/counseling on risks and benefits of CCP Complete a Letter of Intent form by April 1, 2018 – submit tonight Apply to the college where you plan to take courses Take placement tests as required by the college Meet with your HS counselor and college advisor to determine which courses you plan to take Register for college courses and adjust high school schedule if necessary

5 College Credit Plus Includes all dual enrollment options
College courses taken at RHS (Calculus, Climate/Weather, Comp 1, Span 4, and others) Marketing/DECA and other Penta programs Courses taken at participating universities, whether online or on campus

6 Are you ready for college courses?
College-readiness is determined by the college Through the application process and placement testing GPA requirements set by the college Students will be required to take placement testing Even if a student is academically eligible it doesn’t guarantee they will be successful Maturity Self-discipline

7 Student Choice Students can choose any course that applies toward a degree or workforce certification at a public or participating private college PE courses not an option May be for enrichment or to start a degree program Many Penta programs include workforce certifications that may be included in CCP Penta students should coordinate CCP classes with the Penta counselor, Mrs. Zilba, and with the HS. Penta students may need to complete this process through Penta also

8 Graduate with College Credit
Students can earn up to 30 college credit hours per academic year Includes both college and hs courses 1 HS credit = 3 college credits Going over the limit could incur fees – keep HS informed! Students can earn no more than 120 college credit hours while in the program College grades may be weighted College courses must be weighted the same as Honors or Advanced Placement in the same subject area

9 Will course credits transfer?
Certain general education and technical courses will transfer especially from one Ohio public university to another Students must check with colleges to confirm transferability Students can check at for transfer information

10 CCP courses taught at RHS
Calculus - University of Findlay (Schlatter) Composition 1 – University of Toledo (Hodge) Weather and Climate - Owens CC (Demko) History - Univ of Toledo (Rinehart) Marketing/Business courses – Owens (DECA) Spanish 2140, 2150 – Univ of Toledo (Sofo) Others may be added

11 SUMMER SESSION CLASSES
Students can take courses during summer sessions beginning as early as this summer Summer term will apply as the 1st term of the next school year A college’s summer term often begins in May. There may be multiple sessions within a summer term. Meet with your HS counselor as this will effect your schedule for the rest of the school year Counts as part of the 30 credit hour limit

12 Books and Fees Students attending a public college do not pay for either books or fees Students attending a private college may have some fees Books must be purchased through the university bookstore (online purchases will not be reimbursed) Books will be the property of the HS and will need to be returned to the guidance office once the course is completed Student covers parking expenses if there are any

13 Failing or Withdrawing
If you fail a college class, you will most likely be charged for the expense of the course If you withdraw from a course beyond college deadlines, typically in the first two weeks of the semester, you will most likely be charged for withdrawal fees Students who fail to maintain adequate grades in their college courses may be placed on academic probation or dismissed from participation by the college It is possible to pass a course but still not receive credit (NC). If a class needs to be retaken you may be responsible for the cost of the course

14 Failing or Withdrawing
Failing and withdraw grades as reported on the college transcript will be included on your hs transcript Could potentially jeopardize college scholarships and financial aid Could potentially jeopardize high school graduation

15 And once again, Grades… The grade you earn in a college course is applied to your high school gpa and to your college gpa If the course is part of your graduation requirements, it may affect your hs graduation Grades may impact your standing at the college or any colleges you may later apply to Your grades may affect athletic eligibility

16 CCP and End of Course Exams
All students must take the ELA I and II, Algebra 1, Geometry and Biology End-of- Course exams, even if they are choosing to take college courses to meet those credits Students taking US Hist or Gov as CCP courses can use the grade they receive in the course for an EOC score

17 CCP Scheduling Work with RHS counselor before registering to determine how college courses will be evaluated for RHS graduation requirements Meet with your college advisor to register for class

18 CCP and sports Student-athletes selecting to participate in CCP must be certain that The faculty members at the college understand that they will need to provide Q1 and Q3 progress reports The student-athlete is taking enough post- secondary course work exclusively or between the college and the high school combined to be equivalent to five one- credit courses Summer hours will not count toward athletic eligibility

19 Is ccp a good fit? Balance schedule between HS & College (budget time)
Should be both academically and socially self- disciplined - This is especially true for younger students Students may be attending college classes with students aged years and may encounter mature topics in some courses Student/parents responsible for transportation and parking fees (Families that meet District guidelines may request assistance for transportation fees)

20 Is ccp a good fit? Schedule conflicts with extra-curricular activities at RHS (sports, drama, etc.) Conflicts in school-year calendar Extra study time for college classes Personal supplies (calc., camera, tools, etc.) are students’ responsibility Help for college classes may not be available at RHS. Services are offered at colleges

21 What are the differences between high school and college courses?
Tests – weekly or at end of chapter Study Time – 1-3 hours/day Grades – numerous quizzes, tests, homework assgn. Tests – fewer covering more material Study Time – 2 to 3 hours for each hour spent in class Grades – homework generally not used in grading

22 Differences for parents
College High School Parents are strong advocates and work closely with teachers and counselors Parent serves as mentor and support College views student as independent FERPA protects student education records – college won’t release these to parents

23 Letter of Intent Students/Parents should complete a Letter of Intent form by April 1st This is not a commitment to take college courses, but is required for the program Submit a new Letter of Intent each year Any late submissions will have to be approved by our superintendant Can be completed and submitted tonight The Letter of Intent is not your college application – you will still need to go through the application process!

24 Applicants must submit the following documents to Owens:
Online application – Application Type is “College Credit Plus High School Information Form Parent Signature Form Official High School Transcript Applicants are highly encouraged to take the Owens placement test. Students must place into most college-level classes on the reading, math and writing assessment for most classes. May waive the placement test if student has achieved the following or better on the ACT: Reading (21) and English (18) or Math (22). CCP students are required to meet with an academic advisor prior to registration

25 Submission of a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA is required for acceptance
ACT 18 English, 22 Math, 22 Reading Accuplacer 88 English, 55 Math, 80 Reading (other standardized test scores will be considered as well as other factors to determine college readiness) In case of 7th and 8th grade applicants, the student’s GPA and appropriate proof of proficiency will be required

26 Review of Process April 1st– turn in Letter of Intent (tonight)
Apply to a college or complete an application as part of taking a course at RHS (now – April/May) Take placement testing if needed/required (when application is submitted) Meet with your HS counselor to discuss potential courses and to look at your high school schedule (now) Meet with college advisor to choose and schedule courses (once accepted into the college) Set-up online account, attend orientation if required (once accepted into the college) Submit your college schedule to your HS counselor

27 Owens Students taking CCP courses while RHS is at Owens will need to sign in/out RHS is not responsible for students who are signed out but remain on campus Students signed out for CCP courses should stay away from RHS areas on campus
