Background French Revolution – working-class rose up in rebellion against the upper-class aristocrats. After the French Revolution, Napoleon seized power in France and set out to conquer the world. Louisiana would provide a base for his military operations.

1800 – Napoleon forced Spain to give Louisiana back to France in the secret Treaty of San Ildefonso. 1803 – Thomas Jefferson plans to buy the Isle of Orleans.

The Deal Jefferson sent Monroe and Livingston to Paris to negotiate the purchase of New Orleans for 2 million dollars. April 1803 – Napoleon offered to sell the entire Louisiana territory since he was at war with Great Britain. Sold for 15 million (3 cents per acre)

The Treaty April 30, 1803 – The Louisiana Purchase Treaty was signed.

Boundaries The Louisiana territory stretched from the Gulf of Mexico in the South to the Canadian Boarder in the north, and from the Mississippi River in the east to the Rocky Mountains in the west.
