In 1762, FRANCE transfers Louisiana territory over to Spain (Secret ) Treaty of Fountainebleau

4 The Acadians Were exiles from French Acadia/Nova Scotia
They were hard-working farmers and trappers A British officer claimed they were enemies because they … refused to take an oath of allegiance to the Protestant British King

5 The Secret Transfer In 1763, a French official was sent to transfer the colony and when he inspected it he said… The government was understaffed and corrupt The warehouse and the treasury were nearly empty The transfer was kept secret from colonists while French officials waited for the arrival of the Spanish On September 30, 1764 the French government officially announced the transfer

6 Arrival of the Spanish Governor
Antonio de Ulloa was sent to be governor He was a high-ranking and competent naval officer He was not a forceful leader (reserved scientist) Changes made by Ulloa that were unpopular Must follow Spanish trade laws Could trade only with Spanish ports Arrived on March 15th, 1776 with 75 soldiers and 1ship

7 The Rebellion of 1678 By October 28, 1768 an armed mob had gathered in New Orleans Organizers were: merchants (negatively affected by trade laws) of New Orleans and members of the Superior Council (had lost power) Also joining in were the Germans and Acadians

8 EXTRA EXTRA Ulloa only had 10 soldiers left in New Orleans so he could not stop the rebellion. He and his family left New Orleans

9 Arrival of the Military
The Spanish considered these acts to be treason (crime of trying to overthrow one’s own state or government) Alejandro O’Reilly selected to go to colony and regain control
