Lindsay Seers ‘Suffering’ 2017
2
About her practice: This work by Lindsay Seers is about the now-deceased Queenstown (a small town in Tasmania’s own wild west) resident Leo Kelly. Seers has trod carefully and made a humble and admirably respectful work in homage to this man and his art Seers had visited Queenstown prior to making this work Interested in history and how we capture it She focuses on storytelling and memory through film, photography and installation Uses the form of anamorphosis (depiction through distortion) in film since 1993
3
Context The title of this piece refers to ‘the ecstasy’ of Kelly’s faith which is evident in his paintings – ‘suffering’ is being referred here to reflect on his solitary lifestyle and him being convinced to be protected by angels (through the stones given by them) This idea could make this installation seem to be a memorial to Leo Kelly as well as a depiction of how potent and influential faith can be (religious visions) You could say that ‘Suffering’ makes the viewer feel like they’re dreaming as they get to experience an anamorphosis of one’s visions that are very powerful and private

Materials & Media Wood Corrugated iron Benches Paint
HD dual projection onto a screen (FILM) Stereo SOUND Included objects and paintings by Leo Kelly Installation Materials & Media
6
Colours: are brown / grey / old / inside similar to an old church
COMPOSITION Form/Scale: ‘a small tin hut’ – however in terms of the room and the viewer, the scale is large with benches inside to watch a film starring Leo Kelly Colours: are brown / grey / old / inside similar to an old church There are textures: within the corrugated tin and the wood make it feel earthy, 3D and real
7
Volume: Large volume of metal collected to recreate the home
Can say it speaks volumes about Leo Kelly’s life Audio & sound within the film Space: The inside resembles a church but it is actually created to be like Leo Kelly’s self built house. The outside is open and Leo Kelly’s paintings hang on the wall, so it seems like an installation … This also relates to the relationships between elements – in memory of Leo Kelly providing his home, possessions and paintings but also the feeling / experience of a church or a funeral Also revealing his relationship with faith, from visions of angels in the landscape near his home
8
WHY? So that people could observe it but also experience it – to go inside the hut and watch the film in which you can HEAR and SEE Leo Kelly in One can begin to construct their own portrait of the man behind the paintings The work is referring to several things at once – so it allows the spectator experience it and interpret it in their own way Creating the reference of the church and religion during and after Leo Kelly’s life
