3. INTRODUCTION TO BIOETHANOL
Definition: Ethanol so produced from biomass is called bioethanol.
Sources: Any source that is rich in carbohydrates content (First generation: food crops; Second generation: Lignocellulosic plants/grass; Third generation: algae; Fourth generation: Genetically engineered plants).
Methodology: Hydrolysis, anaerobic fermentation, distillation
Merits: Carbon neutral, green, renewable, alternate fuel to replace petrol/gasoline.
Demerits: Bioethanol from edible crops is a crime against humanity, Low energy content, low demand in the present scenario, high cost in the present scenario
