2

3 3-Minute Theses, and Career talks
Dr. Daniel Almonacid - uBiome Johan van Hylckama Vlieg - Chr. Hansen Mark Brown - Cleveland Clinic Marla Cunningham - Health World Limited All SFA students and fellows had 3 minutes to make an impression and describe their research

4 Poster Session one of the best so far
Well received… “One of the best SFA poster session in years” (from ISAPP members) All students and fellows loved the session and the opportunity to present their research Many students and fellows acquired business cards industry reps… a positive sign! Thanks to all jury members for their hard work evaluating the posters!

5 Knowledge Exchange - techniques
Metabolomics for pro- and pre-biotics research | Steph Collins Great tool to understand function of microbiome Broadly divided into targeted and untargeted analysis The work increase after you obtain your data Open-access tools to analyse the data MAGIC BLACK BOX Samples Publishable Data Do’s and don’ts of microbiome analysis | Jean Macklaim Microbiome analysis is evolving and appropriate and correct analysis is required Compositional data analysis (CoDa) is an emerging paradigm for microbiome analysis Effect size is more important than p-values, as was mentioned on the late breaking news Reproducibility in microbiome studies

6 Knowledge Exchange - screening tools
In vitro gut models as a screening tool | Conall Strain New tool to mimic the gut in vitro High-throughput, controllable, doesn’t rely on mice or humans Discussed design (donors, fresh/frozen stool, etc) and endpoints (pH control, metabolites, etc) Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism for preliminary host-microbe investigations | Mark Trinder and Brendan Daisley D. melanogaster is an effective model for host-microbe interactions High-throughput, affordable and convenient, less ethical concerns Genetic knockouts are diverse and widely available

7 Knowledge Exchange - modulation of the microbiome
Expanding the Use of Fecal Microbiota Transplants Beyond C. difficile | Laura Craven FMTs may be able to treat a variety of conditions, such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, IBS and MS Which bacteria contribute to the benefits of FMT? More studies need to take place for health agencies to allow FMTs as treatment for other diseases Debate: Low FODMAP diet for IBS treatment | Bridgette Wilson & Ruth Harvie Low FODMAP diet is effective at reducing symptoms of IBS However, gut bifidobacteria and SCFAs are reduced due to limited dietary prebiotics Limitations in studying long term and longitudinal effects on microbiome FRUCTOSE + GLUCOSE

8 Science quiz

9 Current status and future prospectives
SFA activities were well integrated in the ISAPP program, this year SFA introduction Two SFA talks during the plenary sessions “The young invasion” is here take us seriously we do hard work, we deliver the results We are looking for job opportunities if you have something in mind contact us
