1 Why women’s football is underrepresented? (Questionnaire Analysis)
Arran Rex

2 Football is widely regarded as a “male sport”
Football is widely regarded as a “male sport”. According to Deloitte’s annual review of football finance, the average male Premier League player earned £1.6 million last season. A top women’s international might earn in total — including England salary, club contract and endorsements — only “over £50,000”. (Miranda Bryant: On salaries, football is a game of two genders. This suggests to women that however hard they train or talented at football they are, they’re not as valuable as a man doing the same job as them. We wanted to investigate whether people thought women's football is well represented, and how women's football could be developed. Although women's participation figures are increasing worldwide, only 12% of youth players are female. We wanted to investigate ways of increasing women's participation in the game. So, we devised a questionnaire to try and answer these questions!

3 Do you like football? Yes = 68 % No = 32%
Most responders liked football, but only 2/24 people played for a club ( Edinburgh Caledonia and Caithness Ladies)

4 Why? Lack of clubs? Lack of promotion/encouragement to women? There are a lack of female football role models Some women have been made by society to feel like football is a “male sport”. Possibly difficult to fit training in around family commitments.

5 How do you think we can increase women's participation in football?
Make it natural and credible for girls to play football More training camps at younger levels, more investment, more convenient times. Encouragement at a young age More clubs, fun sessions, at times that fit around family commitments. Advertise clubs and sessions on media. Make football equally accessible to girls as it is to boys (in clubs, schools, colleges etc.), Increase awareness about women’s football and it's benefits. Positively support coaching for women as a career Use role models to inspire young girls to become the footballers of the future.

6 Please rank in order of importance (with 1 being most important, and 5 being least important) Which statements do you feel is most important in football? To get fit = 1 To have fun = 2 To improve skills = 3 To make new friends = 4 To play competitively = 5 Most people thought that it was important to have fun and get fit playing football, rather than playing football competitively.

7 Why? Is this because women’s football is not taken seriously?

8 Do you feel that women’s football is represented well (in the media)?
In conclusion, generally respondents to the questionnaire thought that women’s football was not well represented, but that this is improving. The Women’s World Cup coverage on the television was thought to have raised awareness of the women’s game. Recently, England football legend, Gary Lineker, discussed live on BBC MOTD the recent success of the England Ladies National Football Team. This would have been unheard of a few years ago.

9 How do you think women's football can be developed?
Girls should be encouraged to play from a younger age. Increase the number of opportunities for girls and women to play football (including mixed gender teams). Better coaching & improved development programme for girls and women (from grass root to elite level). More investment/funding. More positive exposure by media (social, newspaper, radio and television), and more high profile events to raise awareness of the women’s game.

10 Female coaches, especially ex players as role models
Increase the number of women in leadership positions (management, coaching and refereeing). Fairer wages (closer, if not equal to their male equivalents) for female professional players. Improve the infrastructure of the women’s game (leagues and competitions)

11 “FIFA promotes the development of women's football and is committed to creating opportunities for female players, coaches, referees and officials to become actively involved in the sport of football.” Worldwide women' participation figures are on the rise. Women's football represents an enormous growth opportunity for the game. Football is a powerful way for women to fulfil their potential in sport and in society.
