Unit 5: Structure and Function of Living Organisms Day 3: Bacteria 2-13-18
Take out your flipbook. I am checking page 3. Science starter: Copy and answer. In what type of rocks are fossils most commonly found AND WHY? igneous metamorphic molten sedimentary 3. Work on pages 4 and 5 of your flipbook – Viruses - while I check page 3.

Homework Complete pages 4 and 5 of your flipbook by Thursday. I will check them. Use the first handout I gave you (Disease/Viruses) and the template (remind me to give this to you.)

12. Virus – List 6-7 characteristics. Draw and label a virus.
13.Host – Def. & exam Diseases Caused by Viruses 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 4.Viruses – Characteristics and examples of viral diseases

14. Virus “Reproduction” -The Lytic Cycle –Define, draw, color, and explain. *Treatment of Viral Infec: 15.Anti-Viral- def.& ex. Other ways to TREAT Viral Infections: 1. 2. 3. Prevention of Viral Infections: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 5. Viruses – Reproduction/Treatment and Prevention of Viral Infections
7
Essential Question: Page ___
How can treatments for bacterial infections cause more people to get sick?
8
Lets’ review page 3 of your flipbook.

7.Pathogenic Bacteria – bacteria that cause disease; ex. Strep throat, MRSA, salmonella, pneumonia
11
Bacterial Diseases cause by Pathogenic Bacteria:
Strep throat MRSA – staph infection Tuberculosis Pneumonia (most types) Diphtheria Pertussis – Whooping cough Tetanus – Lock-jaw Cholera - intestinal Some STD’s – chlamydia and gonorrhea Food poisoning UTI’s (urinary tract infections)
12
Treatment of Bacterial Infections
8. Antibiotic: A drug that can kill bacteria or slow the growth of it. *It can be used to treat infections caused by bacteria such as strep throat, staph (skin) infections (MRSA), tuberculosis, sinus infections, and diseases in plants, as well as some fungal infections.*Many antibiotics are made from bacteria. Ex. penicillin, amoxicillin Let’s watch a short video about antibiotics. history of antibiotics
13
9. Antibiotic resistance-
When bacteria mutate and adapt to survive an antibiotic treatment. Produces a resistant population of bacteria that reproduce more resistant bacteria Caused by overuse/incorrect use of antibiotics in foods, or to treat sicknesses. Known as SUPERBUGS - They are difficult to treat. Ex. MRSA - Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureas
14
Brainpop – When antibiotics don’t work…
15
Vaccines are a PREVENTION!!!!!! Antibiotics are a TREATMENT!!!!!!!!!!
10. Vaccine: Drug that helps your body develop immunity/resistance to a disease (so you never get it); if you come in contact with that disease, your immune system has produced antibodies that say “Nope!”; vaccines are available to keep you from getting some bacterial diseases – ex. DPT (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus bacteria vaccine-one of your immunizations) Vaccines are a PREVENTION!!!!!! Antibiotics are a TREATMENT!!!!!!!!!!
16
Bacteria can be helpful, too!
11. Bioremediation – a waste management technique that involves the use of organisms to remove or neutralize pollutants from a contaminated site. Ex. Bacteria can be used to clean up an oil spill or chemical spill (bacteria break down sludge in septic tanks, too)
17
How to Prevent Getting and Spreading Bacterial Infections
PREVENTION! PREVENTION! PREVENTION! Immunizations (vaccines) whenever possible WASH HANDS OFTEN Don’t shake hands, kiss, or hug a sick person. Stay away! Don’t drink or eat after others or use combs, keys, pens, doorknobs after a sick person Cover mouth & nose when coughing or sneezing Pasteurization of milk and other food products Cook meats to the proper temperature Avoid wild animals & water from rivers or unknown sources Refrigerate all leftovers quickly Wash all used cooking surfaces and tools Quarantine
18
Treatment of bacterial infections
Antibiotics Rest Stay hydrated – lots of fluids Take Tylenol or something to keep fever down, etc.
19
An Ounce of Prevention
20
Work on page 4 if time allows. 4 and 5 due tomorrow.

Wrap-up: What is the term for bacteria not being affected by antibiotic treatments? Which of the following is NOT a way to spread disease: a)shaking hands, b)boiling water, c)sneezing Why do bacterial infections concern doctors? a. There are more bacteria than all other organisms on the planet. b. Bacteria reproduce rapidly. c. Mutations in some bacteria cause them to be unaffected by certain antibiotics.
