2017 AFP Beam Tests AFP has 1 week as main user and will also measure together with ATLAS ITk Pixel in H6B -> 2 periods of ~3 weeks Additional parasitic beam time under discussion (e.g. during ClicPix period ) To use Aconite MPI cooling box in H6A for early 3D pixel and LGAD tests

AFP 2017 Beam Test Goals Further Time-of-Flight (ToF) development
AFP ToF detector has ~20 ps time resolution Established in 5 beam test periods in H6 Based on Cherenkov-emitting Quartz bars + MCP-PMT + HPTDC Right now being installed in LHC -> Direct success of H6 beam tests! Thanks a lot! Would like to improve ToF resolution to ~10 ps for upgrade next winter shutdown New MCP-PMT New, monolithic Quartz bars New TDCs (PicoTDC, TI TDC) Alternative R&D: Silicon Low Gain Avalanche Detectors (LGADs) as alternative timing sensors with higher segmentation Main problem: non-uniform irradiation up to few 1e15 neq/cm² -> irradiation studies (need cooling!) Timepix tests for tracker extension Final system tests for integration ToF Tracker Roman Pot flange Common readout and trigger ToF: Quartz bars 3D FEI4 tracker Roman Pot Flange

Beam Area and Equipment
Usually in H6B No need for external telescope (stand-alone) -> ACONITE and/or AIDA can be used in parallel But usually like to use some services of AIDA, e.g. few AIDA DCS HV channels, switch channel, PI stage Need 2 movable tables, e.g. 1 XSCA for main setup PI stage for SiPMs to scan over Quartz bars For irradiated LGAD studies need cooling Styrofoam box with dry ice (not ideal since no T control) H6A MPI climate chamber or similar (preferred option) Problem: used by ITk Pixel measuring in parallel Could also think of doing these tests parasitically in other periods when cold box available Beam Typically prefer large 120 GeV pion beam ~2x2 cm² Had a good beam file last year (thanks a lot!) 3D FEI4 Pixel Tracker LGADs Quartz ToF SiPMs
