2 First person narration of an english butler named Stevens
July 1956 Stevens decided to take a 6 day road trip to the west country of England He worked as a butler for 34 years His old home owner had died and now come under the ownership of Mr Farraday

3 Stevens likes Mr Farraday but fails to interact with him socially
Mr Farraday= jokey Stevens= serious Stevens has the desire to be banterous, to improve his banter skills to please his current employer

4 Ever since ww2 ended it has been difficult to find enough people to staff manor houses such as Darlington hall The purpose of Stevens road trip was to vist Mrs Kenton (a former housekeeper) who left 20 years earlier to get married Stevens had received a letter from Mrs Kenton hinting that her relationship was failing When Mrs Kenton returns they bicker often but only because they care about one another Mrs Kenton admits that life may have been different if she had married Stevens instead Stevens doesn’t admit admit how he feels about her

5 Author background and influences
Ishiguro was born on November 8, 1954 Kazuo Ishiguro was born in Japan and now a British citizen He had won the Man Booker Prize in 1989 for his acclaimed novel The Remains of the Day. He had obtained a Master's degree in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia. What Ishiguro's novels share in common is that they’re first-person narrators who exhibit weakness or flaws that are exposed in their reminiscing or account of events. His novels are at once character studies and moral inventories that serve to illuminate the context of given political events. In the course of a story we see a character struggling with their own feelings in reaction to interpersonal situations, but also a political environment.

6 Context Both World Wars play a significant part in The Remains of the Day, the period between the wars being of is especial significance. references to the Treaty of Versailles, the rise of Nazism, and so on. The Treaty of Versailles, drawn up at the end of World War I, was signed by the Allied and Associated Powers at Versailles, France, on June 28, 1919.
