5 A different design New apprenticeship standards Employer led
Title of presentation (Insert > Header & Footer > Notes and Handouts > Header > Apply to all) New apprenticeship standards Employer led Employer levy 20% off-the-job component Separate End Point Assessment (EPA) Standards and assessment strategies now created by Trailblazer and Pathfinder organisations rather than sector skills councils. Employers will contract with training providers and assessment organisations through their digital training account. Qualifications will play a much more minor role in the new system. an apprenticeship now has to include at least a 20% off the job learning component . The focus on End Point Assessment mean that the tracking of a candidates performance and readiness for the (EPA) will become a critical success factor. There are separate registers for organisations who wish to deliver apprenticeships and those who wish to provide the End Point Assessments. 18/10/2017 Degree apprenticeships 16/09/2018

6 What does this mean for HE?
Title of presentation (Insert > Header & Footer > Notes and Handouts > Header > Apply to all) Making the most of opportunities Much interest from employers in higher level opportunities Public sector paying levy as well Limited range of standards currently approved for delivery Only 10 universities registered to do EPA 18/10/2017 Degree apprenticeships 16/09/2018

7 Finding the right pattern
Title of presentation (Insert > Header & Footer > Notes and Handouts > Header > Apply to all) Delivery & pedagogic models Few traditional cohorts Learners moving through same programme at different rates Students juggling work and home commitments at same time as studying How to achieve peer/group elements Project work Gaps between degree & EPA requirements Integrating learning at work Weekend delivery doesn’t count as off-the-job unless they normally work sat/Sun 18/10/2017 Degree apprenticeships 16/09/2018

9 Headlines from survey Title of presentation (Insert > Header & Footer > Notes and Handouts > Header > Apply to all) ‘Many of our worries centre around the infrastructure and resource required to meet all quality requirements and ensure the quality of the experience and engagement with the students.’ ‘Students and employers don't really get the need to demonstrate 20% of time spent on off-the-job learning.’ ‘We find students very motivated but they often struggle to cope with workload issues, particularly with synchronous events online.’ ‘Adding new layers of record keeping and management to existing processes, e.g. for compiling and maintaining the Evidence Pack.’ ‘Depending on size - employer needs and expectations vary - the different policy for funding in each UK Country is confusing for employers.’ ‘Working with end point assessors who do not understand the Higher levels of assessment where their only experience has been NVQ style of assessment.’ ‘Managing employer communications - they change line managers all the time and don't tell us, they all want a different pattern of communication in terms of style, content and how we distribute it e.g. via single person, only to line managers, only to mentors etc etc.’ ‘Interaction between practice-based workplace mentors/supervisors and their academic colleagues, particularly relating to project work or jointly delivered courses.’ Might want to split this into 2 slides 14/11/2017 Degree apprenticeships 16/09/2018
