Racism and inequality in the lives of African-American youth
Sociological perspective (social systems, structures, institutions, and society)
Empirical perspectives: insights from qualitative and quantitative research
Theoretical perspectives: conceptual frameworks that help us think about and understand and analyze things we observe in society
Unpacking how we research and write about African- American youth

You can attend all 6 classes

4. Assignments
Weekly Reading Responses (30%): Response (500 – 750 words) to the assigned materials. Engage a single text on its own, or draw connections between several readings. Used for class discussions. Due Tuesday at noon beginning January 26.
Media Analyses (20%): On a randomly assigned date, post an article from a popular media source and a brief response ( words). Due noon Monday beginning February 1. Read peer responses each week.
Final Paper (20%): Should be useful and informative to your own work (short research paper, a research proposal, a policy intervention, curriculum materials). 15 pages Proposal due Friday, February 26. Paper due Monday, March 7.

You’ll be notified of your enrollment status by Friday.
Since the course is a seminar, it will have a low cap, based on diversity of background, interests, program, experience, etc.
