So as you start thinking about your university journey, know that you have some choices around what the experience will look like. Choices that allow you to be a bit creative with your educational path, to explore and try new things. And we want you to explore because we want you to create an experience that’s unique to you.

B.C. TEACHING CERTIFICATE
WHERE TO START? A) Bachelor degree + B) Professional Development Program (PDP) Or Programme de formation professionnelle (PFP) B.C. TEACHING CERTIFICATE teaching certificate issued from Ministry of Education through The Teacher Regulation Branch. This certificate shows that you qualify to work in BC’s education sector-that you have the academic qualifications, teaching experience and personal characteristics required for working with children.

French Major with concentration for Prospective Teachers French Cohort Program (FCP) COOL Option

HOW TO GET THERE? A) BACHELOR DEGREE
1) FRENCH MAJOR WITH CONCENTRATION FOR PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS French + Education courses (in French + English) Student exchange program in France or in Quebec + Minor with another department (option) There is also other options with the French department… For example if you’re not from a French School or an Immersion School, you can still become a French teacher and start learning this language at SFU with a program for beginners. Ask your advisor for more details.

HOW TO GET THERE? A) BACHELOR DEGREE 2) FRENCH COHORT PROGRAM (FCP)
Multidisciplinary program: French, Political Science, History Student exchange program: one year or one semester in Quebec or Europe Cohort (group of 25 students) About 60% of courses taught in French The French Cohort Program (FCP) is a multidisciplinary and bilingual program. This option is perfect for you if you have an interest in Social Sciences.

HOW TO GET THERE? A) BACHELOR DEGREE
3) COOL OPTION (CURRICULUM IN THE OTHER OFFICIAL LANGUAGE) History (ex: Canada since Confederation) Political Science (ex: Introduction to Politics and Government) French Criminology International relations, etc. You can also take the COOL Option (curriculum in the other official language). You combine your area of study with various electives taught in French (to maintain your French while learning in the subject area). The selection of subjects can vary each semester.

B) PROGRAMME DE FORMATION PROFESSIONNELLE (PFP) / PDP – FRENCH MODULE
HOW TO GET THERE? B) PROGRAMME DE FORMATION PROFESSIONNELLE (PFP) / PDP – FRENCH MODULE 12-month intensive program (3 terms) Courses & experiences as a real teacher in classrooms Get prepared! Complete prerequisite courses during Bachelor degree studies Attend an information session in French After completing your bachelor… I know it’s in 4 years (or more) and it can seem far away today… You will have time to think about it… But just keep in mind that the step after if the PFP (Programme de formation professionelle) or in English PDP (Professional Development Program – French module) to become a teacher. If you have any question about that, our colleague Betty is the expert! Don’t hesitate to go see her after our presentation.

WE ARE HERE TO HELP ACCESS TO BURSARIES
Official Languages Study Fellowship from B.C. Ministry of Education (minimum of 55% of courses are in French) $5000 (Bachelor degree) $1600 for PFP Others bursaries: ACUFC (Association des collèges et universités de la francophonie canadienne) Explore Program (5 weeks in Quebec) If you have more than 55% of courses taken in French… There is also other French organization who offer bursaries. For example, the ACUFC… And there is a bursaries to do a program named Explore, which is a 5 weeks experience of study in your second language – Perfect to prepare for the PFP.

Language support: Grammar workshops, tutoring sessions, individual and group support in academic writing Social activities: Various activities and events in French Library Resources: A large collection of French books and documents available on campus and online You are not alone…

She will be able to tell you if you need a transfer of Faculty right now or if you should start with the BGS and be transferred later. After it, you can book an appointment with one of those 3 advisors, depending on what interest you.
